YouTube, the leader in internet traffic in Turkey

According to the information from the “Turkish Electronic Communications Sector Quarterly Market Data Report” from the Information Technology and Communications Authority (BTK) of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, the majority of Internet traffic in the fourth quarter of last year came via landline connections.

The share of landline connections in total Internet traffic was 83.5 percent, the share of mobile connections was 16.5 percent. In addition, 83.3 percent of download traffic was on fixed connections and 16.7 percent was on mobile connections, and 86.1 percent of upload traffic was on fixed connections and 13.9 percent was on mobile connections.

While the available data shows that landline connections are still overwhelmingly preferred for both data downloads and data uploads and play a dominant role in Internet use, when looking at the distribution of total traffic by category, it is noticeable that the use of “streaming media” stands out at 65.8 percent.

YouTube ranks first in both internet traffic and broadcast-based media

The application with by far the highest share of all internet traffic was YouTube. When it comes to user data consumption, this application was at the top with a traffic share of 44.3 percent, followed by Instagram with 17 percent and TikTok and YouTube with 4.7 percent. The data in question suggests that user behavior is largely based on video content consumption and social media platforms account for a significant portion of internet traffic.

YouTube was once again the standout application in the broadcast-based media category. YouTube, which accounted for 57.2 percent of total traffic, was followed by Instagram with 16.8 percent and TikTok with 6.1 percent. It became clear that video content platforms play a crucial role in digital media consumption and that user trends are largely geared towards audiovisual content.

Instagram is the leader in instant messaging

The most frequently used application in instant messaging was Instagram with 64.1 percent. Instagram was followed by Facebook with 15.2 percent and WhatsApp with 10.9 percent. These three applications accounted for the majority of total traffic and were the main platforms where users met their immediate communication needs.

The application that generated the most traffic in the Software Updates category was recorded as Apple Software Update. The respective application, which was the leader with a rate of 37.8 percent, was followed by Google Play with 31.3 percent and Windows Updates with 11.6 percent. These three platforms were observed to dominate the overall update traffic.

Steam excelled at providing access to game content

The most widely used application platform for online gaming is Steam, the world's largest distribution platform for PC games. With a rate of 35.6 percent, Steam stood out as the primary platform for accessing game content. On this platform, Playstation followed with 21.9 percent, Epic Games with 9 percent and Xbox with 5.3 percent. This data showed that online gaming traffic is largely concentrated on platforms with multiplayer mode and high content volume, while mobile and independent games also have a significant user base.

The choice for voice calls over the internet is WhatsApp

By far the most widespread application in the VOIP category, i.e. voice communication over the Internet, is WhatsApp. The leader in this area was WhatsApp, which accounts for 55.9 percent of total usage traffic. This application was followed by Facebook with 11.5 percent, Face Time with 10.4 percent, Snapchat with 4 percent and RTP with 2.9 percent. These five applications were among the primary preferences of users in meeting their audio and video communication needs. This data shows that mobile-based communication applications have become dominant in VOIP traffic and that traditional video conferencing solutions have developed a diverse usage pattern.

The most commonly used network-based storage application by users was iCloud. iCloud, which ranks first in this category with a rate of 64 percent, was particularly preferred for data synchronization and backup services from devices in the Apple ecosystem. This was followed by Google Cloud Storage with 6.8 percent and Google Photos with 5.7 percent.

Looking at content production rates across all categories last year, YouTube was recorded as the platform with the highest share. YouTube, which accounts for the majority of content production at 39.7 percent, followed Instagram at 13.5 percent. This showed that video-based platforms are preferred by users for intensive content production and sharing. Monthly content production trends showed that the highest value (7.5 percent) was achieved in the months of 2025 (particularly February, March and September). These results showed that users regularly produce more intensive content and that platforms' content production cycles are influenced by seasonal effects.

YouTube was the platform with the highest share of content production rate in the streaming media category, which is defined as the technology for playing content such as video, audio and games on devices over the Internet with instant and continuous data flow without the need to download the entire files. While YouTube accounted for more than half of the total content production in this category at 59.6 percent, YouTube was also the most preferred platform by users for producing video content.
