Work on the transition to 5G continues

Turkcell Deputy General Manager Responsible for Network Technologies Prof. Dr. Vehbi Çağrı Güngör said that the plan to launch 5G services in Turkey in 2026 is not only a goal but also a sign of a national vision.

Güngör said: “To realize this vision, we are making extensive preparations to accelerate our pioneering work in 5G that we have been doing for years. “We are aware that 5G is not just fast internet access, but also a technology that will contribute to the transformation of our society and economy,” said.

Güngör explained that 5G studies at Turkcell are progressing along four main axes and that initially there are studies on infrastructure and network modernization and that they are working intensively to make the existing network infrastructures suitable for the high speed, capacity and low latency required by 5G.

Regarding the work they have done in this context, Güngör said: “We continue to support the idea of 'common fiber optic infrastructure', which has not yet achieved a concrete result, but we believe that it will benefit our industry and our country will.” he said.

“We have focused on the innovative applications and services that 5G offers.”

Vehbi Çağrı Güngör said that secondly, they are focusing on the innovative applications and services that 5G offers and are carrying out pilot projects and working on new business models in areas that will utilize the potential of 5G at the highest level, such as Industry 4.0 applications, smart city projects, autonomous vehicles and telehealth services. told.

Güngör explained that the third main axis they are focusing on in 5G studies is research and development activities for 5G technology, saying that expert teams in their fields are making efforts to develop local and national solutions that work with international standards are compatible.

Güngör said: “Our fourth focus is just as important as our research and development focus: our collaboration with domestic 5G manufacturers to create a domestic 5G ecosystem. We are working closely with manufacturers to use as many domestic products as possible at every point of the 5G network,” he said.

“The use of local and national technologies is a strategic priority in the transition to 5G”

Turkcell Deputy General Director Güngör emphasized that they continue to work to enable Turkey to benefit from the unlimited possibilities of 5G at the highest level and continued with his words as follows:

“We want to maximize the security of our critical communications networks by building our 5G infrastructure using domestic technologies. As Turkcell, we are committed to building our 5G infrastructure using domestic and national technologies. The use of domestic and national technologies in Turkey's transition to 5G.” “It is both a strategic imperative and a necessity.” “It is a national matter. Our goal is to ensure that the critical components of our 5G infrastructure are manufactured using domestic and national technologies, thereby strengthening our technological independence.”

Güngör called the fiber optic infrastructure for 5G “indispensable” and explained that the joint fiber optic infrastructure step must be completed in order to efficiently use the country's resources. Therefore, major investments have been made in the distribution of high-speed fiber optic networks and the existing network infrastructures have been updated to meet the requirements of 5G. .

Güngör explained that Turkcell has completed its work to prepare its networks for the transition to 5G, adding that the company is ready to contribute to a healthy transition to 5G.

“We are continuing our work at full speed to introduce 5G in Turkey”

Mehmet Beytur, Deputy General Manager of Support Services and Purchasing Management of Türk Telekom, said that they are rapidly continuing their work to introduce Turkey to 5G and technologies.

Beytur explained that the bandwidth required for 5G and its technologies can only be provided with fiber optic infrastructure, emphasizing that she considers any work that will reduce foreign dependence in 5G as a national duty.

Beytur said: “5G means fiber optic. Fiber optic infrastructure is essential for 5G and the technologies of tomorrow. According to BTK Q3 reporting data, Türk Telekom has installed 427,000 kilometers of the total fiber network length of 549,000 kilometers by the end of 2023.” “To date, we have increased the length of our fiber network to 437,000 kilometers,” he said.

Mehmet Beytur explained that as Türk Telekom, with their work on 5G and the first successes achieved, they played an active role in developing the roadmap of 5G in the world and in Turkey.

“5G will bring about a major change in the industry”

Mehmet Beytur pointed out the change that 5G will bring to the industry and said:

“First of all, 5G means 'speed'. Many applications that were not possible before, such as autonomous vehicles, remote-controlled robotic systems, remote surgery, will be possible thanks to 5G. The real change will take place in the industry. The innovations.” This is what will penetrate our lives with this technology and change companies and innovative services. With its high data speed, very low latency, higher data capacity, energy and cost efficiency, 5G will bring significant changes in sectors such as energy, automotive, healthcare and transportation and logistics, environment and agriculture, media and entertainment “Cloud-based wireless solutions will be in almost find their way into our lives in all areas. This entire technological transformation process will play an important role in strengthening productivity, sustainability and efficiency.”

“Our goal is to transition to 5G with domestic elements”

Türk Telekom Deputy General Director Beytur stated that they aim to transition to 5G with as many local elements as possible and want to ensure that Turkey becomes a power that not only uses this technology, but also brings it to the people around it provides. Beytur emphasized that “the use of domestic elements in the implementation of 5G technology” is among its priority goals.

“5G must be supported by the fiber infrastructure to deliver the expected performance”

Hasan Süel, deputy chief executive officer of Vodafone Turkey, also said that they are working with the authorities to prepare Turkey for 5G.

Süel explained that the sector needs to take steps regarding the transition to new technologies, including 5G, and effective spectrum use and make the necessary spectrum allocations:

“However, for 5G to deliver the full performance expected, it must be supported by fiber optic infrastructure. It is important to simplify the bureaucratic processes related to excavations in this area and to establish regulations that create effective competition between operators. We believe that the fiber optic infrastructure now only provides services at the wholesale level.” “We believe that this should be done with the 'common infrastructure company' model or the 'structural separation model' and that these models, which are implemented worldwide “should also be implemented.” implemented in our country.”

Süel pointed out that 5G is expected to be a new effect of the industrial revolution rather than a new mobile communications technology, explaining that this feature is expected to enable the establishment of intelligent systems in many sectors and increase productivity through the use of automation and robotics .

Süel explained that the sectors that would benefit most from this technology are manufacturing, wholesale and retail, transport and storage, and information and communication. As sectors grow with 5G and increase their production and income, this will also impact Turkey's export capacity, and with 5G, Turkey's export value is estimated to increase by $7.4 billion in 15 years.

Süel emphasized that maximum efforts will continue to be made and support the use of domestic products in the 5G infrastructure.
