Ghebreyesus reported on his social media account about the situation in Sudan, where conflicts between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (HDK) continue.
Ghebreyesus said WHO calls on the international community not to ignore what is happening in Sudan, stressing that Sudan is facing one of the most serious humanitarian and health crises in the world.
Ghebreyesus said: “More than 33.7 million people, more than half of Sudan's population, are in urgent need of life-saving assistance. The ongoing conflict has brought the health system to the point of complete collapse. Recent attacks on medical facilities have further exacerbated this crisis.” he said.
Ghebreyesus recalled that at least 64 people died and 89 people were injured in the drone attack on El Dain Training Hospital in East Darfur State on March 20, pointing out that another drone attack on El Cebeleyen Hospital in White Nile State on April 2 left 10 medical and administrative personnel dead and 22 people injured.
Noting that there have been other attacks on the country's health during this period, Ghebreyesus said: “These events are a powerful reminder of the urgent need for a renewal of international solidarity and decisive political and humanitarian action. Sudan cannot face this crisis alone.” gave his assessment.
Conflicts in Sudan and violations by HDK troops
Sudan has been the scene of violent clashes between the army and the foreign-backed HDK since April 15, 2023.
These conflicts, which have resulted in one of the world's worst humanitarian crises, have killed tens of thousands of Sudanese and displaced nearly 13 million people.
While the HDK controls the center of five of the country's 18 states, the Sudanese army maintains its dominance in most of the remaining 13 states, including the southern, northern, eastern and central parts, as well as the capital Khartoum.
