“We are ready for any scenario” message from the EU to the US regarding tariffs

Von der Leyen and EU Council President Antonio Costa spoke at the press conference after the EU-Armenia summit in Yerevan.

“A deal is a deal and we have reached an agreement.” Von der Leyen explained that the core of the agreement with the USA was prosperity, common rules and reliability.

Von der Leyen pointed out that at this stage both parties should implement the agreement in question, respecting the different democratic procedures.

Noting that the EU side is in the final stages of implementing the remaining customs obligations, von der Leyen said that the US side has not fulfilled some agreed commitments.

Von der Leyen said: “That's why we want mutual benefit, cooperation and reliability from this agreement. We are prepared for any scenario.” he said.

EU Council President Costa also said: “Trade sovereignty lies entirely with the EU Commission. We ourselves and the 27 member states fully support the work of the EU Commission and its President.” he said.

US President Donald Trump announced on Friday that the tariff on cars and trucks of EU origin would be increased to 25 percent, saying they did not comply with the trade agreement.

Negotiations on an EU-US trade deal concluded in July 2025 at Trump's Turnberry golf course in Scotland.

Under the deal, EU countries agreed not to impose tariffs on US products, but it was announced that the US would impose a 15 percent tariff on EU products.

The fact that the EU side still could not complete the approval process for the agreement triggered a reaction from the US.
