UN: There is no safety for civilians anywhere in Gaza

UN Secretary-General spokesman Stephane Dujarric discussed developments in the Middle East at the daily press conference in New York.

Dujarric explained the situation regarding the security of people in the region: “As we have been told, there is no guaranteed security for civilians anywhere in Gaza.” he said.

Dujarric shared reports that all five areas in the Gaza Strip are still under attack by Israel, explaining that these attacks have come in the form of “air strikes, artillery fire, naval fire and armed clashes” and have caused casualties.

Dujarric said the bullets in those attacks hit a health center run by the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in Deir al-Belah, causing “damage and injuries.”

Dujarric stressed that despite the vital risks, humanitarian aid organizations continue to support people in the region as best they can, saying that civilian infrastructure should always be protected and not attacked.

The UN Secretary-General's spokesman said the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) reported that an estimated 57,000 women running households in Gaza faced economic hardship, resulting in loss of income, limited access to basic services and an increased risk of abuse and mistreatment.
