According to China's Xinhua News Agency, the statement from the Ciciang Meteorological Observatory announced that Typhoon Bavi hit the coast of Yuhuan City in the province.
The statement said the typhoon was expected to move in a northwesterly direction and gradually lose its impact.
The Ciciang provincial government announced that the emergency response level against the typhoon has been increased to the highest level and about 1.72 million people have been evacuated to safe areas.
The statement from the China National Meteorological Center announced that there would be heavy rains for three days in the eastern parts of the country.
The statement said there would be occasional rainfall in Ciciang, Shanghai, Jiangxi and some regions in northern China, and warned of the risk of floods and landslides in mountainous areas as well as flooding in cities.
