In his assessment, ASELSAN Director General Akyol said ASELSAN is constantly working to transfer the competencies developed in defense technologies to civilian technologies.
Pointing out that they consider transportation as a strategic and critical area in this context, Akyol recalled that the signaling system in Istanbul Airport's Kağıthane-Gayrettepe Metro Station, which was recently opened by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, was implemented nationwide in cooperation was developed with ASELSAN. TÜBİTAK.
Akyol stated that they have integrated sensors that detect the passage of trains, radars that can measure speed and communication components that enable communication in the headquarters, adding that they have made additions to the train that Measure the location, speed and status of the vehicle Control the driving computer.
Akyol pointed out that they have developed an end-to-end system that manages these automatically with centralized software and continued his words as follows:
“We called this system COBALT. With this activity we want to operate the line more comfortably, increase capacity and safety. In this way, we ensure that the line's costs are more effective and its journey is safer, while saving time. In strategic times, in times of emergencies, wars and disasters. In this case, it is also important for our country that these systems are operated completely nationally. Turkey has become one of the five countries in the world that have their own signaling system. This is what we want to achieve. Turkey is a brand in this area. In addition to defense, the nationalization of critical technologies in civilian areas is called a “national technology move.” “We believe it will really come to life. For this reason, transportation technologies are a critical area for us.”
It is also used on TCDD's 99 conventional train lines
Pointing out that new projects and studies are continuing, Akyol said that in the future they will introduce technology where train and subway lines will operate completely unmanned.
Akyol explained that on the one hand they are trying to expand nationalization work and on the other hand they continue to work with stakeholders to achieve a higher level of automation.
Stating that their skills in maintaining, malfunctioning and operating the system, which also extends to machine learning and artificial intelligence, Akyol has improved and gave the following assessments:
“In order to expand this competence not only in subways but also on normal conventional railway lines, we launched the “On-Vehicle Automatic Train Protection System” project together with the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure to equip 99 train sets from TCDD with national Equip signaling systems. With this work, we started the “On-Board Automatic Train Protection System” project, just like in the subways, in normal trains. “The signaling will also be activated on the routes. As ASELSAN, we will continue to serve our nation in transportation in the field of defense.”
Recalling that the signaling system in the first phase of Istanbul Airport Metro was put into operation in early 2023, Akyol explained that national signaling systems will be used on the route that will be extended to Halkalı in the near future.
It is also used in friendly and partner countries
Akyol stated that there are some discussions about using this system especially in projects in friendly and brotherly countries. Pointing out that Turkey's construction and contracting sector is carrying out important projects around the world, Akyol explained that Turkey now has the opportunity to carry out the metro construction project in one country end-to-end with the wagons, trains and signaling systems, which it has developed nationally.
Akyol explained that this expertise will also support exports:
“We will continue to expand this expertise in Turkey with new projects in the coming months. We will continue to export our technologies to friendly and brotherly countries in various regions of the world. We have started negotiations with the Turkish republics on this issue. They are the countries with which we can do business most quickly and easily. The heart of Turkey lies in “In our geography, doors open more easily.” Our contracting industry flies the Turkish flag all over the world. Wherever you are, ASELSAN will accompany you with these national technologies.”
