Turkish science team is in Antarctica for the eighth time

The team that took part in the 8th National Antarctic Scientific Expedition, which was held under the auspices of the Presidency, under the responsibility of the Ministry of Industry and Technology and under the coordination of TÜBİTAK MAM Polar Research Institute, left a difficult journey 4 days after Leaving Istanbul on the route extending south on the 103rd parallel.

The journey, which began on January 27 in Istanbul with a flight to Sao Paulo, Brazil, covered 13,800 kilometers after 4 separate flights lasting approximately 24 hours and arrived at Antarctica's King George Island with approximately 2 tons of technical equipment.

In accordance with the Antarctic Environmental Protection Protocol, the expedition team took important precautions to prevent the transport of non-native creatures to the continent and cleaned their boots with disinfectant solution as they exited the aircraft as they set foot in Antarctica for the first time.

“We included three high school students in our expedition”

Coordinator of the 8th National Antarctic Scientific Expedition, Prof. Dr. Burcu Özsoy explained in her statement to the AA correspondent here that they arrived in Antarctica on the fourth day of their journey, which started from Istanbul, and said: “It is a sunny but cold Antarctic day. “There are currently 20 Turkish scientists who have landed in Antarctica and we have three high school students with us,” said.

Stating that high school students will join scientists in Antarctica and implement their projects here, Özsoy also said that scientists from Spain, Bulgaria and America will take part in the Turkish science expedition this year.

Emphasizing that flights to Antarctica's King George Island have not been possible for several days, Özsoy said: “Actually, all work carried out in Antarctica only takes place when weather conditions allow it. Since the weather conditions allowed this for the first time in Antarctica. “A few days ago we took this flight, Czech, Bulgarian, and we set foot as Turkish scientists,” he said.

22 individual projects are being carried out

Prof. Dr. Burcu Özsoy stated that the Turkish scientific team will carry out 22 different projects this year and made the following statements:

“Turkish scientists, who will travel from the 62nd parallel south to the 68th parallel south, will implement these projects in and around Horseshoe Island. We have a wide range of scientific studies, from geosciences to life sciences. These scientific studies will range from microplastics to volcano studies and geoscience sampling. “This will include testing the equipment we have developed as part of the National Technology Move and testing it in Antarctic conditions.”

The coat designed by high school students is being tested by scientists

Prof. DR. Burcu Özsoy said that the coat made of wearable technology, which was applied to scientists in Antarctic conditions by the team of three high school students who applied and won first place in the 2204-C TÜBİTAK High School Students Polar Research Project Competition should be tested.

Özsoy said: “This coat will actually measure human parameters such as heartbeat and pulse, and very serious research awaits us for the 8th National Antarctic Scientific Expedition,” he said.

The THY cabin crew wishes you good luck

On the other hand, the cabin crew of Turkish Airlines IST-GRU of flight TK193 was presented with a sign during the flight by the 8th National Antarctic Scientific Expedition team that read: “Prof. Dr. Burcu Hanım and her valuable team; We were happy.” We would be happy to accompany you on your journey to the White Continent. We look forward to accompanying you on your journey to the White Continent. Our country “I wish you good luck and continued success in this important role you will represent.” He sent a written message. At the end of the flight, the cabin crew and the scientific expedition participants took a souvenir photo.

The team plans to leave King George Island and embark on a week-long cruise to reach first Dismal Island and then Horseshoe Island, where Turkey's temporary science camp is located.
