Aquaculture production in Türkiye continues to break records. In 2025, total fish production, including hunting and aquaculture activities, exceeded 1 million tons, reaching a new record. The anchovy catch also recorded a notable increase, reaching 245,000 tons.
The performance of the fishing industry in foreign trade should also be highlighted. In 2025, aquaculture exports exceeded the level of $2.2 billion, making a significant contribution to the country's economy.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the year 2026 began with notable hunting activity in the Sea of Marmara. In recent days, intense hunting activity, called the “Torik Influx,” has been observed off the coasts of Istanbul and Tekirdağ.
Although torics larger than the bonito and weighing over 3 kilograms each are reported to be caught in large quantities, fishermen state that they have not encountered toric flocks of this size and density for many years and that no activity on this scale has been observed.
250 million lira income
According to the information received, such a toric influx has not occurred for 30-40 years, but these images can be seen mainly in historical Istanbul photographs.
It is estimated that more than 500 tons of toric have been caught since the beginning of the year and that fishermen earned an income of about 250 million lira during this period.
In addition to tuna fishing, positive indicators of aquatic biodiversity in the region include the fact that species such as tuna, mackerel and red snapper have started catching fish again in the Sea of Marmara.
It is found that fisheries policies based on a balance between conservation and exploitation and production planning with effective control mechanisms contribute both to the protection of biodiversity and to increasing the economic strength of the sector.
