Energy and Natural Resources Minister Bayraktar answered CHP Istanbul Deputy Fethi Açıkel's written question about the energy and raw material supply problem that may arise from the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
Stating that Türkiye has had no natural gas supply through the Strait of Hormuz since last year, Bayraktar stated that the decline in LNG supply in this region has no impact on Türkiye's natural gas supply security.
Stating that total oil imports in the same period amounted to 50.4 million tons, of which about 5 million tons came through the Strait of Hormuz, Minister Bayraktar said: “The stoppage of oil shipments in the Strait of Hormuz remains within a manageable range in terms of security of supply and is not expected to cause any problems.” shared his knowledge.
Bayraktar emphasized that domestic and renewable energy investments have gained momentum under the “Fully Independent Turkish Energy Policy” to ensure long-term energy supply security and reduce foreign dependence, and reported that the share of renewable resources in installed electricity output increased to 62.4 percent at the end of March this year, and the total share of domestic and renewable resources exceeded 71.6 percent.
Bayraktar noted that according to last year's production data, the share of renewable power generation in total power generation was 43.3 percent, recalling that oil and natural gas exploration and drilling activities are carried out with six deep drilling vessels and two seismic research vessels.
“Important agreements have been signed that ensure our country’s energy security.”
Stating that natural gas production in the discovered Sakarya gas field has been increased to 9.5 million cubic meters per day, Alparslan Bayraktar stated that it aims to increase daily production to 20 million cubic meters this year with the first floating production platform “Osman Gazi” and to increase daily production capacity to 45 million cubic meters with the second floating production platform scheduled to be commissioned in 2028.
Minister Bayraktar stated that with the oil discovery in Gabar, the daily production has reached 81,000 barrels, the capacity of the Tuz Gölü underground natural gas storage facility is 1.7 billion cubic meters, and the capacity of the Silivri underground natural gas storage facility is 4.6 billion cubic meters.
Noting that the total gasification capacity of Tuz Gölü underground natural gas storage facility is 80 million cubic meters per day and that of Silivri underground natural gas storage facility is 75 million cubic meters per day, the total gasification capacity is 155 million cubic meters per day, Bayraktar continued as follows:
“The average daily demand of 210 million cubic meters in the period March 2026 will be safely met by our pipelines, LNG/FSRU terminals and storage facilities. The current utilization of our underground storage facilities with a total capacity of 6.3 billion cubic meters is 72 percent and these storages contribute to the flexibility of the system. As part of our vision of resource diversification, emphasis is placed on regional and global cooperation. Through intensive energy diplomacy in the areas Petroleum, natural gas, mining and nuclear energy “Strategic partnerships have been formed and important agreements signed to ensure our country's energy security.” Despite the current international energy crisis, no risks to our country's energy supply security are expected thanks to our strong energy infrastructure, our diversified resource portfolio and increasing domestic production capacity.”
