According to the ministry, the underground storage facilities in Tuz Lake and Silivri, which contribute to Türkiye's energy supply security, help ensure the balance between supply and demand on days when natural gas consumption increases.
As Turkey enters the winter with full natural gas tanks, it is leaving the cold winter days behind without much need for its tanks. Thanks to the LNG infrastructure and the diversity of resources it has developed, tank utilization is currently at 71 percent.
Türkiye continues its efforts to restore its warehouses to full capacity during the period of global supply crisis.
The Silivri natural gas storage facility currently has a storage capacity of 4.6 billion cubic meters. The capacity of the facility, which also bears the title of “Europe’s largest offshore storage”, is expected to be increased to 6 billion cubic meters in 2028.
On the other hand, the capacity of the Tuz Gölü natural gas storage facility, which currently has a capacity of 1.7 billion cubic meters, is expected to be increased to 8.5 billion cubic meters in 2032.
“We prevented our warehouses from remaining empty”
Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar, whose assessment on the issue was included in the statement, explained that the amount of gas in natural gas tanks usually decreases after the winter months and that they are refilled in the summer months and prepared for the next winter.
“We have prevented our natural gas tanks from remaining empty by significantly increasing our LNG purchasing capacity. As a result, our natural gas tanks are 71 percent full even outside the winter months.
Bayraktar stressed that it is working to increase the capacity of natural gas storage, saying: “With the work so far, we have increased our total storage capacity in Silivri and Lake Tuz to 6.3 billion cubic meters. We will continue our investments in storage. With the investments we will make, we will be able to store at least 20 percent of the natural gas we consume in 2028.” he said.
