Founded in 2019 by high school students and supported by the Seyhan Youth Center, the technology team “ALESTA” develops underwater vehicles that carry out certain tasks autonomously or remotely with the support of artificial intelligence and cameras.
The team, which has been taking part in TEKNOFEST with its projects for 7 years, won awards in the areas of “Unmanned Underwater Systems”, “Most Original Software” and “Best Team Spirit” and also returned with honors in numerous international competitions.
Finally, the students developed an underwater vehicle with a 3-axis robotic arm with precise gripping capability and a 6-motor propulsion system.
The autonomous or remotely controlled vehicle can dive underwater to a depth of 60 meters, classify objects and collect them using robotic arms.
The students who competed in the Maritime Advanced Technology Training-Remote Controlled Vehicle Competition (MATE-ROV) in Egypt with the vehicle they named “Storm” won the “Best Communication System” award and were eligible to compete in the world finals of the MATE-ROV Underwater Systems Competition, taking place June 23-27 in Canada.
Young people who continue their preparations for the competition in the laboratories of Adana Science High School and Çukurova Semi-Olympic Swimming Pool strive to become first in the competition.
“We are trying to bring our possibilities and abilities to an even higher level”
Team advisor and information technology teacher Osman Onur Dilci said they had developed robots that could perform tasks such as underwater research and search and rescue operations.
Explaining that they are trying to raise the possibilities and skills to the highest level, Dilci said: “We have come this far through careful and dedicated work. We are sustainably training our new members and integrating them into the team. We still have a long way to go to improve.” he said.
Sinan Çakıcı, the team mentor of Seyhan Youth Center affiliated to the Ministry of Youth and Sports, also explained that they provide materials, accommodation, camping and transportation support to students.
“We work day and night in swimming pools and workshops”
Team captain Mehmet Ulaç Girgin, a 10th grade student, said that he worked in the software and mechanics areas of the project.
“We work day and night in swimming pools and workshops.” With this expression Girgin said:
“We graduated well in Egypt and qualified to travel to Canada. Our goal is to achieve high levels of success by doing our best in Canada. We also want to communicate with different teams there, learn from them, teach them, establish productive communication and make good contacts.”
10th grade student Buğlem Nisan Ekinci explained that she was interested in the mechanics and programming parts of the vehicle.
Ekinci emphasized that thanks to the team he had the opportunity to apply the theoretical knowledge he learned at school, saying: “I knew the programming language but had never put it into practice. In this way, I had the opportunity to put my knowledge into practice through drawing and designing.” he said.
