Ver.di negotiator Holger Rösler said in a statement that the work stoppage, which began as planned early in the morning, would last until midnight.
The statement from the airport operator Flughafen Berlin-Brandenburg (FBB) said that no passenger aircraft could land or take off during the strike.
57,000 passengers were affected
The cancellation of all flights scheduled during the day directly affected approximately 445 flights and 57,000 passengers. Passengers had to change their travel plans.
Stating that they had informed airport management, airlines, ground services and security forces in advance of the situation, passengers were advised to contact the relevant companies for reservations and alternative travel options.
The background to the strike decision is the ongoing collective bargaining between the union and the employer side (FBB).
Ver.di described the employer's offer in the second round of talks last week, which only provides for an annual increase of 1 percent until the end of 2028, as a “frivolous provocation”.
In negotiations with around 2,000 employees, Ver.di is demanding a salary increase of 6 percent for the workforce or a monthly salary increase of at least 250 euros. The union also demands the right to an additional day of vacation for its members and demands that the contract be for a period of 12 months.
Today's strike is the first warning strike in the current collective bargaining period.
The recent wave of strikes within Lufthansa brought domestic flights to major centers such as Frankfurt and Munich to a standstill.
