The process for the TÜRKSAT model satellite competition has begun

The process for the Model Satellite Contest, which was first organized by Türksat in 2016 and was incorporated into the TEKNOFEST organization with the contract signed with the T3 Foundation in 2018, has started.

The competition allows university students to gain real experience of satellite projects on a small budget. In the competition, which covers all phases of satellite projects such as design, production and post-mission evaluation, the participants will develop and produce a small satellite that meets telemetry and communication requirements, offers an autonomous structure and works in an interdisciplinary manner. In this way, the participants will learn all the processes of the satellite.

The competition, which also contributes to the national production of space technologies, provides students with the opportunity to exchange experiences with other university teams and to communicate with institutions, companies, experts and engineers in the sector. The competition also aims to train human resources in Turkey in the field of space technologies.

The competition was held for the first time in 2016

The competition, which first started in 2016 with 3 teams and 18 people, has grown into an event with the participation of 114 teams and over 1000 participants from 6 different countries.

This year the competition consists of a project plan and organization chart, a preliminary design review and critical design review reports, a qualification review phase, a flight qualification check and rocket flight phases. The winning team will be determined based on the post-flight check report.

Presentations of preliminary design review reports in the competition will be completed from May 21 to 28, and submission of critical design review reports will be on June 28. Teams competing in the final phase will be determined following the qualification review phase presentations from July 17 to 19.

Model satellites are launched with rockets

Contestants who will create model satellites, which are a smaller version of a real satellite, will also experience the entire process from designing a space system to its launch. The teams that successfully complete the first stages will compete in the flight phase at the Aksaray Hisar Shooting Range. Model satellites will be launched to a height of about 700 meters using rockets specially designed for the competition.

In the competition, in which students and doctoral students can participate as a team, the first place winner will receive 150,000 lira, the second place winner will receive 120,000 lira and the third place winner will receive 100,000 lira.

The awards will be presented at TEKNOFEST 2024, which will be held in Adana this year.
