The term of the Presidency, which is held alternately by EU member states every six months, has been transferred to Ireland from the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus, which has held the office since January 1.
While the Dublin government set its slogan as “strength in unity”, “competitiveness, values and security” were announced as themes for the presidency's term.
Ireland will focus on issues such as increasing the competitiveness of EU countries in global markets, enlargement, continuing defense initiatives, strengthening the Union's capacity in artificial intelligence and continuing support to Ukraine.
The Dublin government also said it would “work to end the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza and the deteriorating situation in the West Bank.”
Ireland will hand over its presidency to Lithuania on January 1, 2027.
