The director of the Beekeeping Research, Development and Application Center (DAGEM) of the University of Düzce (DU), Prof. Dr. Meral Kekeçoğlu, said that they have completed laboratory and field studies on the effects of global warming and electromagnetic field on bees.
Kekeçoğlu explained that as part of the studies at the DAGEM Molecular Genetics Research Laboratory, they created experimental areas with electromagnetic waves and UV rays, pointing out that they noticed the reactions of bees released into nature after they were left in these areas for a while.
Kekeçoğlu stated that this year the season followed its normal course and bees experienced an “early spring,” pointing out that this gave hope to scientists.
“UV rays do not affect the bee’s genetics, they affect their behavior”
Stating that the nectar flow was very good at the beginning of this period, Kekeçoğlu said: “The condition of bees is very good now, they have shown great development. In the next period, the development of bees will be affected by the sudden warming and sudden cooling of the weather. We hope that the weather will keep its normal course and the development of bees will continue.” he said.
Stating that they had a productive season from a scientific perspective, Kekeçoğlu continued as follows:
“We have completed scientific studies on electromagnetic fields, which we believe are the most harmful to bees among climate change and environmental factors. It is well known in society that 'global warming significantly affects bees', affecting their behavior.
“We have seen that electromagnetic fields stress bees”
Sharing the information that in long-term laboratory and field studies, Kekeçoğlu found that the main impact on bees is high-voltage power lines, base stations and WI-FI (wireless networks) devices that emit electromagnetic waves, saying: “We have seen that electromagnetic fields stress bees. We have seen from these results that global warming indirectly affects plant flora, which is important for the life and behavior of bees. The electromagnetic field works directly affects the bee and affects its genetics and brain. It causes the bee to become stressed “And there is an increase in stress proteins.” he said.
Kekeçoğlu explained that in field studies they examined the differences in the stress proteins of bee colonies exposed to electromagnetic fields and those not exposed to electromagnetic fields, and found that these fields cause bees to be unable to find nectar sources.
Kekeçoğlu mentioned that they conducted laboratory studies especially on the effect of base stations on bees and said, “There can be many factors that harm living creatures in the environment. Therefore, we studied the bees that we exposed to the electromagnetic field and the bees that we kept away from this situation. According to the results we obtained from the brain cells of both groups, we found that there was a serious increase in stress proteins in the group that was exposed to the electromagnetic field. With this result we can say that we should definitely not build our hives.” next to or near the base station.” gave his assessment.
