“The coming years will be a time of reshaping the global energy system”

Minister Murat Kurum and Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar spoke at the Turkey Energy Transformation Investment Forum co-hosted by the Presidential Investment and Finance Office, Bloomberg and Energy Shift Capital as part of London Climate Action Week.

Speaking here, the institution said that as part of the forum, it assessed investment opportunities that will shape the future of the global economy through the energy transition.

Minister Kurum said: “The next decade will be a time of transformation of the global energy system. The winners of this transformation will be the countries that can bring together capital, technology and policy at the right time.” he said.

“We now have to act faster and more decisively to implement it.”

Kurum pointed out that they met at a critical time as Türkiye prepares to host COP31 in November in Antalya, stressing that energy security is back at the top of the global agenda.

The institution noted that the need to diversify energy supplies and invest in renewable energy capacity is felt more than ever, stressing that the COP process has now entered a new phase with the implementation phase.

Kurum explained that the world has been negotiating goals and commitments for many years: “This process was necessary, but today people want to see the next step. They expect climate action to lead to concrete results in the real economy and in their daily lives.” he said.

Minister Kurum emphasized that her message as COP31 Presidency was very clear and made the following statements:

“We must now act faster and more decisively to advance implementation. The energy transition is at the heart of climate action, energy security and economic competitiveness, and recent developments have shown us once again that dependence on volatile energy markets carries significant economic and social costs. At the same time, we have seen that countries with strong renewable energy capacity and high energy efficiency are much better prepared to manage times of uncertainty and protect their citizens.”

“The priorities put forward are strengthened by Türkiye’s own experience.”

The institution emphasized that Türkiye has significantly increased its renewable energy capacity over the past 20 years through the results-oriented work of the Energy Ministry under the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Minister Kurum stated that Türkiye has kept pace with the changes in industry, production and energy use in buildings.

Kurum emphasized that Türkiye has also taken very serious steps in its new housing construction practices, saying, “For example, after the earthquakes that devastated eleven provinces, we built half a million houses using the nearly zero-energy building approach within two years and reduced energy consumption by 39 percent.” he said.

Murat Kurum assessed that the priorities of the COP31 Presidency are strengthened by Türkiye's own experience and stated that in recent months it has listened carefully to governments, the business community, financial institutions and civil society.

Kurum pointed out that one message came through very clearly in these meetings, saying:

“There is strong support for the climate process to focus more on implementation and concrete results. That is why the COP31 action agenda focuses on bringing everyone together on concrete solution areas such as electrification, green industrialization, zero waste and circular economy, resilient cities, climate finance and food systems. These are areas where concrete progress can be made, implementation accelerated and real results achieved on the ground.”

Minister Kurum explained that these issues are now at the heart of not only the climate agenda, but also the economic agenda, explaining that investment decisions and production models are increasingly driven by the green transformation.

The institution emphasized that companies that adapt early to this change will gain significant advantages in terms of accessing new markets, increasing exports and long-term competitiveness.

The institution invited all business partners to join the COP31 journey and adopt the goals of the action agenda, saying it wanted the Turkish business community to take a leading role in this process.

Murat Kurum said: “Everyone coming to COP31 will have the opportunity to experience first-hand how Türkiye's innovation and lofty ambitions are shaping the energy transition on a global scale. At the same time, we will pave the way for new partnerships that work together to advance decarbonization and development.” he said.

“Türkiye Transition Factbook” will make investment opportunities more visible

Minister Kurum stated that one of the important topics of the forum; Pointing out that this is the release of the document entitled “Türkiye Transition Factbook” prepared by BloombergNEF, he stated that the success of the clean energy transformation should be supported by strong data, reliable analysis and accurate forecasts.

The institution said: “This brochure will provide a data-based framework for Türkiye's energy transformation and make investment opportunities in clean energy, electrification, networks, storage, industrial transformation and green finance more visible.” he said.

Kurum said they see the brochure not only as a technical study, but also as a strategic beginning that will create a common reference point between investors, financial institutions, technology companies and policymakers.

“This process that we initiated here today will also make Türkiye's energy transformation story more concrete, measurable and legible to the investment world. I will be very happy to welcome you all to Antalya in November.”
