Strong interest in paying tax debts in installments

According to the Financial Administration (GİB) of the Ministry of Finance and Finance, there is great interest in the scheme that allows taxpayers to pay off debts to the tax office in installments.

Finance and Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek also stated that the regulation does not constitute an amnesty, that a system has been created to protect justice for taxpayers who pay their taxes regularly, and pointed out that the application will provide convenience to taxpayers such as traders who have the “will to pay”.

With the application, all claims monitored by the tax office and due on or before June 5, 2026 can be paid in installments. Included in this framework are claims such as income taxes, corporate taxes, VAT, fees, traffic fines, civil penalties, fines and student loans.

Debts other than VAT can be paid in installments of up to 72 months.

Under the scheme, debts other than VAT can be paid in installments for up to 72 months. For sales tax, the installment payment period was set at 12 months. Accordingly, more than 228,000 taxpayers submitted an application under the regulation in the first 25 days. A total of 206 billion lira of debts of those who benefited from this opportunity were paid in installments.

For debts other than VAT, 18.01 percent of taxpayers preferred 6 installments, 30.69 percent preferred 12 installments, 13.21 percent preferred 24 installments and 25.19 percent preferred 36 installments. The proportion of taxpayers who preferred 48 installments was 10.6 percent and the proportion of taxpayers who preferred 72 installments was 2.3 percent.

The interest rate for all debts to tax offices that fall due before June 5, 2026 has been set at 29 percent annually.

For those whose debts do not exceed 10 million lira, installment payments can be made without collateral. Anyone who exceeds this amount only has to provide security equal to half of the excess amount.

There is no lien and electronic applications can be submitted

There is no obligation for the debtor to contact the tax office for payment in installments. Applications can be submitted electronically via the Finance Administration website (gib.gov.tr), the Digital Tax Office (dijital.gib.gov.tr) or via e-government (turkiye.gov.tr).

Additionally, those who pay off their vehicle debt in installments have the option of having their vehicle inspected.

The tax office will not initiate compulsory proceedings against taxpayers who pay their debts in installments. Taxpayers' bank accounts, real estate and vehicles are therefore not seized due to installment debts. In addition, arrest warrants on vehicles can be canceled and sales transactions suspended.

To benefit from this opportunity, it is important for taxpayers to submit their application by August 31 and not to delay their applications until the last day. Taxpayers who benefit from this opportunity can pay their first installments by September 30th. Payments for further installments can be made in subsequent months.
