Palestinians in Gaza welcomed Spain's 1-0 victory over Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
Many Palestinians, unable to watch the game at home due to power and internet outages, gathered around screens set up in cafes, streets and squares to watch the final.
The residents of Gaza watched the game between Spain and Argentina with excitement and celebrated the Spanish championship with applause and cheers after the final whistle.
Numan Abdullah explained that Spain has supported the Palestinian people for many years and that is why they came together to support Spain in the final.
Abdullah stressed that the Palestinian people are a people who want peace, saying the message they want to convey is “peace, solidarity and unity with the people who support them.”
Hani Abu Zerk also stated that the World Cup final gave the residents of Gaza morale, albeit for a short time, despite the ongoing attacks, destruction and harsh living conditions.
Abu Zerk stated that they stand with the countries and people who support Gaza and Palestine, pointing out that the support that Spanish football player Lamine Yamal gave to Palestine was appreciated by Gazans and therefore many people supported Jamal and Spain in the final.
Mahmoud Diyab, one of those watching the match, said Gazans struggling to survive in tents without electricity or internet gathered in cafes and public squares to watch the World Cup matches.
Diyab called on the international community to continue its solidarity with the Palestinian people, stating that the Palestinian issue is the common cause of all free people and calling for greater support for the Palestinian people.
On the other hand, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and some Israeli ministers supported Argentina in the final against Spain, which responded to Israel's attacks on Gaza.
According to the statement from the Israeli Prime Minister's Office, Argentine Ambassador to Israel Shimon Axel Wahnish told Netanyahu that Argentine President Javier Milei said: “You are my friend, you always support us. I was happy to hear that you supported Argentina for me.” He played his voicemail in which he used the following statements:
Netanyahu responded to Milei's message by saying: “Javier, you are a true friend. We support you and stand behind Argentina tomorrow. Good luck.” He replied with:
