The objectives of the National Space Program, implemented under the coordination of the Ministry of Industry and Technology, include raising awareness of space among young people.
In this context, a protocol was signed between All Inventors, Invention, Innovation and Research Association (TÜMMİAD) and Valentura Technology and Investment Inc. under the leadership of the Turkish Space Agency (TUA), which will be a model for cooperation between the public and civil society. The aim of the protocol was to create a broad participation network in the space domain, covering both Turkey and the Turkish states, the Balkan countries and the geography of the Middle East.
With this multi-stakeholder collaboration, a hackathon series will be held to strengthen regional interaction, give young people a voice in the field of science and technology, and spread Türkiye's space vision to all parts of society.
The first event of the series will be held from March 28 to 29 in 37 cities with the aim of increasing space awareness in Türkiye and the countries of the region, fostering curiosity, productivity and entrepreneurship culture for space technologies among young people, and transforming the emerging innovative ideas into sustainable added value.
Subjects of study
The events will not only take place in a competitive format based on technical knowledge, but will also be designed as inclusive learning environments that promote creative thinking, teamwork, problem solving, scientific curiosity and imagination.
As part of the hackathon, teams will participate in the topics “Autonomous route optimization for the lunar surface”, “Innovative radiation protection for communication satellites”, “Signal verification and anti-spoofing for regional positioning and timing systems (BKZS)”, “Spaceport: simulation of logistics and environmental impacts”, “Early warning network for solar storms”, “Orbit cleaning: model for tracking space debris”.
On the other hand: “Closed Loop Space Agriculture Life Support System”, “Data Compression in Deep Space Communications”, “First Lunar Contact Digital Education and Storytelling Tool”, “Deep Space Astrobiology: Bio-Trace Hunt”, “Space Weather and Cosmology: Signal Distortion Model”, “Space Botany and Closed Biosphere Chemistry”, “Orbital Dynamics: Space Junk Collision”, “Dynamics”, “Cosmic Data Extraction and Processing Line”, “Cube Satellite System”. Architecture Design,” “Astrobiological Sensor Payload Data Architecture,” “Microgravitational Experiment Design,” “Regional Satellite Team Optimization,” and “Local Entrepreneurship Models” can also be explored.
The teams can also provide solutions on the topics of “Defense of National Rights”, “National Plan for the Protection of Critical Infrastructure”, “Next Generation Space Skills”, “Mars Colonization (ISRU and Autonomous City)”, “Lunar South Pole Colony (4 days/4 nights)” and “Next Generation Space Station (Modular Assembly)”.
How is it prepared?
The Astro Hackathon will be held in two phases: regional and country-based. Nearly 6,000 participants from 37 cities in Turkey, especially Ankara, Istanbul and Muğla, will complete the “local jury process” organized by local leaders.
The hackathon will take place in each region at the same time and lasts 2 days. On the last day of the competition, the teams present their projects to competent juries from the fields of space and aviation. The winning teams will be evaluated by the TUA jury throughout the Astro Hackathon Türkiye.
During the project process, teams can receive support from local juries. At the end of the event, teams that have correctly uploaded their projects into the system present their final versions to the juries. After the presentations, the projects of the teams that won the local championship will be evaluated by the TUA in the final, and the teams will have the opportunity to meet with investors, funding, consulting, office, brand and workshop support opportunities.
Anyone aged 15 and over can take part in the hackathon and offer solutions in the areas of space technologies, satellite systems, space exploration and astrophysics.
After the local competitions, successful inventors and entrepreneurs have the opportunity to compete in the finals with the TUA rating across Türkiye. The crowning conclusion is the bringing together of the best ideas from all over Türkiye.
