The statement from the South Korean General Staff noted that the Pyongyang government fired about ten ballistic missiles from the Sunan region near the capital towards the Sea of Japan.
The statement said caution should be exercised against further missile launches and information about the incident had been passed on to the US and Japan.
According to Japan's Kyodo Agency, Japan's Defense Ministry said the missiles were estimated to have crashed outside the national exclusive economic zone.
The news said Japanese Prime Minister Takaiçi Sanae had ordered government officials to collect information about the incident and ensure the safety of aircraft and ships.
