According to the government, the draft defense budget for fiscal year 2026 has increased by 9.4 percent compared to the previous year.
Accordingly, the defense budget for the new year was set at $58 billion.
It was stated that the $640 million earmarked for coastal defense in the said budget by 2028 will be spent on the commissioning of large unmanned aerial, surface and submarine vehicles for surveillance and defense purposes under the system called “SHIELD”.
It was pointed out that in this area the focus will be on imports in the first phase and cooperation with Türkiye can be carried out in this context.
Focus on missiles and unmanned systems
Under the new budget, Japan particularly wants to strengthen the defense of the southwestern islands and increase its “long-range strike” capability. In this regard, significant funding has been allocated to long-range cruise missiles and unmanned air, sea and submarine vehicles.
It was stated that a significant part of the defense budget was earmarked for the development of long-range missile capabilities and in this context, Japanese-made “Type 12 anti-ship missiles” with a range of about 1,000 kilometers would be purchased.
In order for the defense budget to come into force, it needs parliamentary approval by March 2026.
