GYHİB Chairman Pepe emphasized in his assessment that the increase in exports was particularly influenced by the deliveries of fishing vessels, special vessels and tugboats to Northern European countries, saying that the sector continues to increase its competitiveness in the international market.
Stating that in the first six months of the year they reached an export value of 1.5 billion dollars, Pepe said: “We want to break a new record by the end of this year and reach an export value of 2.5 to 3 billion dollars.” shared his knowledge.
Mustafa Talha Pepe stated that a significant part of the first 6-month performance was due to the deliveries of the contracts signed two to three years ago and that the Turkish shipbuilding industry has shown significant development in recent years.
GYHİB Chairman Pepe continued his words as follows:
“As GYHİB, we wave the flag of our country first and then the flag of our union in every market where we see potential, and we are proud of that. We regularly participate in ship and yacht trade fairs in many European countries. We hold individual events. We strive to promote both the sector and our country as much as possible.”
We were in Greece last month. We will probably be at the trade fairs in Germany and France in September and October. I would like to say that we are trying to represent both our country and the industry here. We try to go wherever there is an opportunity. Borders don’t matter to us, distances don’t matter. As long as we have the opportunity and see the opportunity.”
Pepe pointed out that shipyards' order books have decreased slightly compared to previous years, stressing that it is important to maintain incentive and support mechanisms so that the sector can continue to increase its potential.
“We expect the incentives and facilities that will guide our industry to remain in place.”
Pointing out that the shipbuilding and yacht building industry is an extremely high value-added export item, Pepe said: “We have an average export value of $25 per kilogram. Therefore, I think our industry is one of the highest value-added sectors. I think it adds value to Türkiye's overall exports.” he said.
Assessing the impact of the increase in exports in this sector on employment, the sub-sector and domestic production, Pepe said: “I assess this very positively. We have expanded the sub-sector in recent years and it has shown its contribution. We have increased employment and it has also shown its contribution to the sector. Therefore, we expect and want the incentives and institutions that guide our sector to continue as before.” he said.
Mustafa Talha Pepe addressed the impact of the increase in domestic production rate on the export success of the sector, saying:
“Increasing domestic production definitely has a very positive effect. Because as you know, especially during the epidemic period, all ship owners and manufacturers have tested that networked supply chains suffer losses very quickly in possible crises. Therefore, we actually show this to our customers in the shipbuilding and yachting industries, we try to prepare a perfect delivery process for the product produced domestically with as many sub-industry inputs as possible in order to make it more independent of materials from abroad. Hence, of course, Die's contribution Sub-industry and domestic production are becoming more and more valuable here every day. “When both the user and the user are faced with such an option, it becomes something that the end user prefers and is satisfied with.”
Pepe explained that they are quickly adapting to the changes in the field of sustainable shipping and that today more than half of the ships produced in Turkish shipyards have electric or LNG-based environmental technologies.
Pepe explained that the production of environmentally friendly ships has increased, especially for the Northern European market, and that they are closely following the changes in the global maritime sector and designing their production processes accordingly.
Pepe stressed that their main priority in the coming period is to maintain the market share gained over the years in Europe, adding that the sector should continue to be supported to maintain the strong position it has achieved in fishing vessels, ferries, tugboats and specialized vessels.
