Sectors that are characterized by innovative initiatives were announced

The Turkish Statistical Institute announced the results of the “Innovation Research 2024” study.

According to this, 39.6 percent of companies with 10 or more employees were innovative in the period 2022-2024. In the period 2020-2022, this rate was 39.8 percent.

During these years, 36.6 percent of companies with 10-49 employees, 49.6 percent of companies with 50-249 employees, and 69.3 percent of companies with 250 or more employees conducted studies to bring new or significantly improved goods or services to market or to implement business process innovations in these years.

While the innovation rate of companies in the industrial sector was 42.1 percent, this rate in the service sector was 36.9 percent.

85.1 percent of product-innovative startups brought their products to market before their competitors

While the rate of startups dealing with product innovations was 19.8 percent in the period 2020-2022, it was 23.6 percent in the period 2022-2024. Among the companies that produced product innovations, the proportion of those that produced goods innovations was 80.3 percent and the proportion of those that produced service innovations was 73.4 percent. Considering the market status of new or significantly improved products, it was found that 96 percent of product innovations were new to the company and 85.1 percent were innovations to the market in which the company operated.

36.1 percent of startups carried out business process innovations, also known as basic business functions. In the previous study, this rate was 35 percent. The area where the most innovation was implemented in business processes was the methods of producing goods or providing services, at 77.2 percent. This category was followed by accounting or other administrative operations at 71.5 percent and information processing or communication methods at 69.7 percent.

25.6 percent of startups with innovation activities received financial support from various sources. He stated that 48.9 percent of these companies used the financial support they received from central public institutions or organizations, 10.9 percent from local or regional public institutions, 7.9 percent from other EU institutions and 6.4 percent from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation program for research and development or other innovation activities.

40.4 percent of companies carrying out innovation activities collaborated with other companies, individuals or organizations. While 79.7 percent of these companies cooperated in research and development or other innovation activities, the proportion of those that cooperated in other routine entrepreneurial activities was 65.3 percent.

31.3 percent of companies engaged in innovation activities cooperated in R&D and innovation activities in the country, 7.6 percent in European countries and 6.3 percent in other countries.

Strategies that impact the economic performance of companies with innovation activities in the period 2022-2024 were also examined for their importance. 72.6 percent of the startups attached great importance to quality, 72.1 percent to satisfying existing customer groups and 64.2 percent to strategies for developing new customer groups.

Every fourth startup filed a patent

The research, which also questioned effective methods of protecting the competitive advantage achieved through innovation activities, found that 48.3 percent of companies involved in innovation activities had trademark registration. This was followed by patent applications at 26.4 percent, the use of trade secrets at 22.4 percent, utility model applications at 14.1 percent, industrial design applications at 13.3 percent and copyright applications at 13.2 percent.

60.7 percent of the companies surveyed purchased machines, devices or software. While 91.8 percent of these companies invested in machinery, equipment or software based on the same or improved technology as before, 53.1 percent invested in machinery, equipment or software based on new technology not previously used. In the previous reference period, 59.7 percent of companies with innovation activities purchased machines, devices and software. 92 percent of these startups invested in technology they were already using, and 52.4 percent of them invested in new technology.

Improving the company's reputation became the most important factor for environmental innovation

The study analyzed whether companies had implemented innovations that brought benefits for the environment. When examining the environmental benefits of the innovations implemented under the initiative, it was found that 58.8 percent of them replaced the materials they used with those that are less polluting or harmless. 56.9 percent of startups involved in innovation activities reduced soil, noise, water or air pollution per unit of production, 56.6 percent reduced water or material consumption per unit of production, and 55.9 percent reduced energy consumption or total carbon footprint per unit of production.

When the innovations implemented were examined in terms of the environmental benefits resulting from the use of the products by the end user, 60 percent of the initiatives enabled an extension of product life through longer-lasting products and 57.4 percent enabled a reduction in air, water, noise and soil pollution.

It was found that 56.2 percent of startups that carried out innovation activities facilitated the recycling of post-use products, 55.2 percent reduced energy consumption or overall carbon footprint, and 46.6 percent enabled biodiversity protection.

Of the companies that are engaged in innovation and have implemented innovations that bring environmental benefits, 91.7 percent said that the decision to implement innovations that bring environmental benefits is important due to improving the company's reputation, 90.1 percent due to the high costs of energy, water and materials, 89.6 percent due to existing environmental regulations, and 88.8 percent due to existing environmental taxes, fees and payments.
