Türkiye's investments in research and development (R&D) activities reached a record level in 2024. Total spending on research and development increased from $16 billion to $20 billion year-on-year. The research and development workforce reached 311,000 people, an increase of 20,000 people.
Industry and Technology Minister Mehmet Fatih Kacır shared TÜİK's R&D spending data for 2024.
According to the data, 64.8 percent of total R&D spending was made by companies. 46.9 percent of R&D spending in the manufacturing industry was made by high-technology companies, and 40.2 percent was made by companies operating in the medium-to-high technology sector.
The proportion of women in the R&D ecosystem continued to increase. While 34.2 percent of R&D staff are women, this proportion rose to 47.9 percent at universities.
While the share of indirect R&D incentives (corporate, income and VAT support) in companies' R&D spending was 15 percent in 2015, it rose by 10 percentage points to 25 percent in 2024.
It was emphasized that Türkiye has developed into a global research and development hub with its universities, research centers, technoparks, innovative initiatives and qualified human resources.
