OpenAI claims to have “hacked” ChatGPT for NYT copyright lawsuit

According to the filing in the Southern District Court of New York, OpenAI has asked the federal judge to dismiss four allegations in the newspaper's complaint in the “copyright” lawsuit filed against the company by The New York Times.

OpenAI said the allegations in the New York Times complaint did not meet journalistic standards, claiming the newspaper paid someone to “hack” the company’s products.

The New York Times, one of the leading newspapers in the United States, filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft on December 27, 2023, alleging that their works were used without permission and copyrights were violated to train artificial intelligence technologies.

The newspaper accused OpenAI of using millions of its published articles without permission to train chatbots that compete with news organizations that have become trusted sources of information.

In doing so, The New York Times became the first major media organization to sue companies that develop ChatGPT and other popular artificial intelligence platforms over copyright issues related to their written works.
