Minister Bayraktar: The first reactor in Akkuyu is over 90 percent complete

Alparslan Bayraktar, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, met with students from the Nuclear Energy Engineering Department of Sinop University.

According to the ministry, Bayraktar, who inspected the site of the new Sinop İnceburun Nuclear Power Plant as part of his visit to Sinop, then met with students from the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture of Sinop University, Department of Nuclear Energy Engineering, at the Sinop Governor's Office.

Bayraktar stressed that Turkey aims to commission 20 gigawatts of nuclear power capacity by 2050, saying that under the Turkish nuclear program, in addition to the ongoing Mersin Akkuyu nuclear power plant, two nuclear power plants will be built in Sinop and Thrace and small modular reactors will be added to it System added. He explained that they plan to include it.

Bayraktar noted that as part of the test production this year, the first electricity production will occur from the first reactor of the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant (NGP).

“They are honorary nuclear ambassadors”

Bayraktar pointed out that nuclear energy is used not only to generate electricity but also in a variety of fields from medicine to materials science, explaining that Turkey has been involved in international organizations related to nuclear energy since the 1950s.

Pointing out that Korea, which has embarked on a journey together with Turkey, has become a nuclear exporting country, Bayraktar said: “In the past 70 years, many nuclear power engineering graduates have worked in various professions. Most of them retired without even seeing a nuclear power plant.” As people who have received training in this field, you know this: Nuclear energy is actually an area in which the international agreements to which Turkey has joined, be applied at the highest level. All of this obliges us to act within a certain standard. “You are their ambassadors.” gave his assessment.

Regarding opposition to nuclear power on environmental grounds, Bayraktar said: “On the contrary, we need nuclear power for the environment.” At the United Nations Conference of the Parties, 25 countries said: “If the world wants to fight climate change, then its nuclear power must be in the triple by 2050.' “Among these 25 countries, there are countries with strong economies. “Like other industrialized countries, Germany can switch to nuclear power,” he said.

“We need well-educated young people”

Bayraktar emphasized the importance of domestic equipment production and human resources in the nuclear field, saying:

“We sent 300 students to study abroad for Akkuyu. The graduates came and started working. I hope that after you graduate you will work on this project or the project in Sinop or Thrace. Their numbers must increase. Because we need a very strong one.” Well-educated young people “We need to learn a foreign language. English is not a must, but knowledge of Russian and Chinese is a great advantage when it comes to following the literature.”

On the other hand, Bayraktar explained that they presented a research reactor requirement to the countries concerned during the negotiations for new power plants, saying: “We just built a nuclear power plant, produced electricity and walked away. There must be research.” In these negotiations: “Let's make nuclear fuel in Turkey.” We plan to build the entire supply chain, starting with nuclear fuel. Due to the intergovernmental agreement signed in 2010, the construction of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant is over 90 percent in Turkey, Akkuyu, Sinop and Thrace. It will also have a nuclear capacity with a total of 12 reactors,” he said.
