The Lufthansa Group announced that it would optimize its flight offerings and reduce capacity in the summer months.
The statement recalled that the price of jet fuel has doubled since the beginning of the conflicts in the Middle East: “A total of 20,000 short-haul flights will be canceled from the program by October. This corresponds to approximately 40,000 tons of jet fuel.” The expression was used.
The statement pointed out that the planned timetable adjustments will reduce the number of unprofitable short-haul flights in the Lufthansa Group network, while the global network, particularly long-haul connections, will remain significantly more efficient than before due to the increased kerosene prices.
In keeping with the new approach, the statement said that 120 daily flight cancellations were initially implemented yesterday and that the medium-term route planning for the coming months would be revised taking the decline in capacity into account.
Last week, International Energy Agency (IEA) President Fatih Birol warned that Europe could soon face the risk of fuel shortages.
Netherlands-based airline KLM said it would cancel 160 flights within Europe next month due to rising fuel costs, and Lufthansa decided to suspend operations at its subsidiary CityLine due to cost pressures.
EU refineries can cover 70 percent of kerosene consumption. The remaining aviation fuel is imported primarily from the Middle East and the Gulf States.
