According to the news in the national press, 299 people from Kargi and Kalacha villages in Marsabit district filed a lawsuit against the allegation that the company called “Amoco Corporation”, which was purchased by the British energy company BP (British Petroleum), polluted groundwater by releasing toxic waste into the environment during oil exploration activities between 1985 and 1993.
The lawsuit, filed in the Environmental and Land Court of the city of Isiolo, accused the company, which was then opening at least ten oil wells in the region, of polluting groundwater by leaving dangerous substances such as radioactive radium isotopes, arsenic, lead and nitrate in open-pit mines after drilling operations.
The petition filed with the court alleged that the pollution in question resulted in the deaths of more than 500 people and the destruction of many animals.
The plaintiffs are seeking compensation for deaths and livestock losses they allege were caused by contaminated water, comprehensive environmental cleanup and ecosystem restoration in the affected areas, and accountability from relevant authorities in Kenya who are accused of failing to act on pollution allegations.
While the court decided to implicate Kenya's Ministry of Energy and Petroleum in the case, it ordered a notice to be sent to all defendants within 14 days.
