Inspired by Mount Süphan, he prepared a TÜBİTAK project

Muhammed İkbal Kaya, a 9th grade student of Ağrı Hüseyin Celal Yardımcı Science High School, decided to prepare a project inspired by the volcanic mountain Süphan under the guidance of teacher Melek Güçlü.

Convinced that productivity can be increased by transporting soil from volcanic mountains to low-yielding areas, Kaya prepared the project “The Impact of Transporting Volcanic Soils to Agricultural Areas on the Procurement of High-Producing Crops Using Ağrı Province as an Example.”

With the aim of developing an environmentally friendly and sustainable project, Kaya and his teacher Güçlü completed the project by collecting soil samples from Ağrı, Turkey's highest point, a volcanic region, and from Hamur district next to Süphan and Tendürek mountains have.

Kaya took first place in Geography in the “TÜBİTAK 55. 2204 A High School Students Research Projects Competition Van Regional Final” held on March 4 in Batman with the participation of Ağrı, Bitlis, Hakkari, Muş, Siirt, Şırnak and Van Provinces took place and in Ankara in May. will take part in the TÜBİTAK finals.

The project titled “New Design Examples with the Synthesis of Turkish and Islamic Symbols from the Past to the Future” was created by Gamze Nur Aytekin, a consulting teacher at Tutak Anatolian Imam Hatip High School, and her students Merve Nur Altay, Hiranur Duran and Yağmur prepared Kılıç took first place in the history section in the TÜBİTAK competition.

Provincial Director of National Education Hasan Kökrek said they are proud of the students' achievements and are always there for them.

Kökrek explained that the aim of the project in volcanic areas is to increase agricultural productivity in barren areas:

“The world is heading for a difficult time in the production of high-quality food. The quality of our food decreases as the atmosphere becomes more polluted. Our duty is to carry out projects to eliminate such negative situations. By mutually exchanging the lands of Ağrı and In Rize, where there is a different climate, we will both increase the variety of products and measure the quality of the soil as a result of the project. Our students from Tutak Anatolian Imam Hatip High School also qualified for the TUBITAK History finals as regional winners. Hopefully our students will represent our province in the best possible way in the final.”

“With this project we want to increase our economic prosperity.”

Student Muhammed İkbal Kaya explained that his family is involved in agriculture in Patnos District and that he was impressed by Mount Süphan and chose the project.

Stating that he knows that the soil structure of volcanic areas is fertile, Kaya said: “With this project, we plan to increase our economic prosperity. Volcanic soils can be relocated to other unproductive agricultural areas abroad, but this has not yet been done here.” We wanted to study this problem by asking, “What results can we achieve if we do it?” said.

Kaya stated that they analyzed the soil samples they took from volcanic areas and upon analysis found that the soil had sufficient levels of elements such as sodium, calcium, iron and zinc and that it contained minerals that could considered sufficient for agricultural productivity but cannot cover the costs of ground transportation.

Kaya explained the soil was poor in organic matter and said:

“Natural fertilization methods can be used to increase this organic matter. We recommend regular quality control in agricultural lands, carrying out pesticide and improvement work with a higher level of awareness, protecting our soil wealth and trying to increase productivity in agriculture through methods such as the use of quality seeds and fertilization.”

Kaya explained that his goal was to become the first in Turkey and that he wanted to bring something to the country.

Yağmur Kılıç, a student at Tutak Anatolian Imam Hatip High School, stated that they made 21 different designs and created new design products by synthesizing Turkish and Islamic symbols.
