In Gabar, women are working to strengthen Türkiye's energy

Seismic data acquisition studies initiated by the Turkish Petroleum Joint Stock Partnership (TPAO) in the Gabar mountain region in 2017 entered a new era with the discovery of oil in 2021.

With this discovery, production activities in Gabar gained momentum after President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced on December 12, 2022 that a field with oil reserves had been discovered.

As part of the work carried out by TPAO and the Turkish Petroleum International Joint Stock Company (TPİC), Gabar was transformed into an oil production center, described as “the largest onshore oil discovery in the history of the Republic.” Wells were opened in the fields in which the names and memories of the martyred sergeant Esma Çevik and the martyred teacher Aybüke Yalçın are kept alive.

While 80,000 barrels of oil are produced daily in the region, exploration activities for new reserves continue with 30 drilling rigs.

Women take an active role in production activities in Gabar

Both women and men work in the difficult terrain conditions of Gabar Mountain at an altitude of 1,850 meters.

About 150 of the employees are women, with many titles such as engineers, technicians, technicians, laboratory assistants, chemists and geologists at various levels of expertise, from seismic scanning to drilling, from oil production to laboratory testing.

Women, who take an active role in the production processes, work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to strengthen Türkiye's energy vision, despite the difficult terrain, climate and working conditions.

Women who come to the region from different provinces of the country to participate in oil production put on their helmets and go to the field, analyze oil samples in laboratories and follow the production processes in the drilling field.

“We continue our work to give power to energy”

Geologist Hazal Oktay, who is from Ankara and has been working on site for 3.5 years, said that the number of female workers was small when she started working, but that number has increased over time.

Stating that they have done very important work for the country in Gabar, Oktay said: “We are happy and proud. We continue our work to give strength to the energy on March 8, International Women's Day.” he said.

Stating that women can achieve any job and that they should work in any sector, Oktay said:

“Since I live in Ankara, being away also has its disadvantages. There are times when I miss it, but I love my job, so I am happy here. Like any profession, this job has its difficulties, but I love my job.”

“It makes me proud to work here as a woman”

Derya Ayata Yıldız, who came from Ankara two years ago and worked as a chemical engineer in Gabar, said that the work they did was difficult, but they overcame this difficulty with their determination.

Stating that it is an honor to contribute to Türkiye's energy independence, Yıldız said:

“We have difficult field conditions, but as women we are proud to work here. It is an honor to add value to production. On March 8, International Women's Day, we will be back on site and continue to contribute to our energy independence.”

Stating that women have shown that they can work in this way in all fields, Yıldız said: “Although our working conditions are difficult, I recommend everyone to live here and breathe this atmosphere. Working here is worth everything because the results we achieve are good. As energetic women in Gabar, we are in the field and in service.” he said.

“I am happy to be able to make a contribution to the country”

Meryem Ertaş, who lives in Şırnak and works as a laboratory manager, said that she has been working in this sector for 4 years and that the number of female employees in Gabar is increasing day by day.

Ertaş stated that he is happy to work in his hometown and contribute to the country's energy independence:

“As a woman, I like to contribute to the country and am proud to work in Gabar. Women from Şırnak should study this department and advance in the energy sector. But that is not the case. We work here as women and know that it is not difficult. “We are concrete role models.”
