He points a lens into the depths of space – Latest News

Galaxies, planets, stars…

While the sky still keeps all its secrets, astrophotographer Can Rıfat Turcan tries to convey to us the unknown of space with his videos and photos.

The images that emerge after days of exposure and processing take us to completely different galaxies.

The first destination is Andromeda

Can Rıfat Turcan studied physics at the University of Samsun on May 19th and began his intense interest in space after he came into contact with astrophysics.

Stating that he was curious about space in his childhood, Turcan joined the university's astronomy club and played an active role in establishing the observatory.

After settling in Istanbul, he began taking his first photographs in space. He describes his first job as follows:

“I bought my first camera and started photographing the Milky Way. “When I got my telescope, the first target I shot was the Andromeda Galaxy.”

The most important thing is darkness

Can Rıfat Turcan states that it took him 3-4 days to expose dark targets and 1-2 days to photograph brighter targets.

Turcan points out that certain conditions must be met to take space photographs and explains the intricacies of the work in the following words:

“Istanbul does not perform well in this regard. The first condition is darkness. The darker, the better. Another condition is the height. The higher you are, the sharper the images are because the humidity is lower. There should be no clouds or rain. In fact, if possible, the moon should not be visible.

“I wish I could see the Orion constellation”

Turcan says: “Just taking photos is not enough, you also have to be able to process the photo well” and explains that this is a job that is at least as demanding as taking photos.

He says his biggest dream is to see the Orion constellation up close.

“I love it very much because it was my childhood dream and because its mythology is very strong. “That’s why I named my cat Orion,” he says.

He also has suggestions for those who want to start astrophotography…

Turcan recommends photographing the Milky Way with a wide angle first and emphasizes that you need some patience as the process is a bit long and tedious.
