GPT-4o brought the relationship between artificial intelligence and education to the agenda

While the new model focused on the instant video communication feature, the images of artificial intelligence instantly solving a student's geometry problem also brought the relationship between artificial intelligence and education back to the agenda.

Dean of Istanbul Medipol University Faculty of Education, Prof. DR. Regarding the relationship between artificial intelligence and education, Servet Bayram stated that ChatGPT is getting better day by day and it is possible to share more precisely with people's usage.

Bayram explained that ChatGPT initially searched the Internet and synthesized information from Western sources: “While it had great success in areas such as medicine, physiology, biology and mathematics, it did not provide the same level of accuracy in areas that required knowledge of cultural structures, such as law, history and sociology,” he said.

“It recognizes everything it sees, interprets it, and provides immediate guidance and support.”

Prof. DR. Bayram continued his words and explained that artificial intelligence has made great progress in two years from 2022 to today:

“The newly released GPT-4o now has the ability to reason via speech, text and images, and therefore includes innovations such as real-time speech, emotional state recognition and live stream interpretation. This is what it does best when solving geometry problems or in “Here it sees people and their emotions and feelings.” By predicting his thoughts with an artificial intelligence program, it provides support and guidance to the person in a fluid and interactive way, as if it were a special mentor, friend, teacher or psychologist, recognizing and interpreting everything he sees, offering instant guidance and support, all while using natural human language, giving human-like responses.”

“It can be an important support for both students and teachers.”

Bayram explained that individualizing education will increase success, learning and persistence, and said that artificial intelligence also serves this function.

Bayram emphasized that artificial intelligence meets students' expectations according to their learning style and needs: “In this way, it analyzes current performance, identifies weak points or areas that need improvement, and makes suggestions to increase success.” It also increases fluency and interaction by providing automatic instant feedback. “GPT-4o can provide these rules such as 'provide information with examples, practice with guidance, and evaluate with feedback.' In this regard, it can provide important support to both students and teachers,” he said.

Pointing out that GPT technologies have negative effects and consequences, Bayram said that they cause a departure from reality and human interaction, deterioration of communication skills, social isolation, mental fatigue, loss of the ability to think and synthesize deeply, deterioration of perception-cognition relationships, mental schemas, conditioning for quick results, inner restlessness. He said that elements such as deterioration of self-life and balance mechanisms are the main negative effects.

Bayram said that as the technologies in question advance, the power of addiction, distraction, conditioning, presenting false information as real, believing and manipulating people also increases. Bayram said, “In this way, the erroneous and fictitious facts of the artificial world can be implemented into our reality. Since this will lead to exploitation and assimilation, I think that conscious adults, not children, should use these technologies sparingly.” gave his assessment.

“National digitalization is crucial for the existence, survival and future of our country.”

Pointing out that artificial intelligence also destroys the privacy of personal information, Bayram continued:

“Now, the feelings and thoughts, desires and passions, as well as the private life of each individual are defined, and the individual's unique self-psychological state is recorded with digital codes. What he looked at, for how long and for how many seconds, what his eyes focused on while looking, how his breathing, body electricity were affected, speed and private information, beliefs and values, such as the way their preferences were formed, are also defined, and digital texture codes unique to the person, such as the Turkish Republic ID number, are stored. “National digitalization such as national defense and national education is vital for the existence, survival and future of our country.” .”
