Facebook and messaging application Messenger, one of social media giant Meta's largest platforms, have faced a wave of technical outages on a global scale. The issue directly affected both mobile applications and websites.
During the disruption, other meta-services such as Instagram and WhatsApp largely managed to stay online despite using the same infrastructure in the background. However, some glitches were noticed in the desktop version of Instagram.
When the outage began, users were automatically logged out of their accounts and when they tried to log in again, they were greeted with the warning “An unexpected error has occurred.” There was an error message on Facebook's main website saying the company was working on the issue and would resolve the situation as soon as possible.
Bug tracking sites could not withstand this intensity
Meta does not operate a live health site for individual users. The error tracking panel that the company offers to its trading partners was not updated to account for the issue in the first few hours of the outage. Downdetector, one of the largest platforms that immediately records internet outages worldwide, was also blocked on Facebook due to high demand almost at the same time as the outage.
The latest data, released ahead of the site's full shutdown, showed that the technical issue, which began around 6:45 a.m. Pacific Time (4:45 p.m. CET), affected the entire world and caused a major disruption to all Facebook products.
