Eid al-Adha will accelerate the leather industry

Explaining that the import of leather to Türkiye decreased during Eid al-Adha, Mehmet Musa Evin, member of the Leather, Fur and Saddlery Technical Committee of the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce (ITO), said: “This is a big win for the leather industry. Leather traders are looking forward to Eid al-Adha. We can say that the reason for this is the increase in raw leather and easier access to raw materials.” he said.

The raw hides produced from sacrificial animals during Eid al-Adha make a significant economic contribution to Turkey's leather and fur industry, which produces high value-added products.

While the leather collected during the holiday season is processed in many areas from shoes to bags, from saddlery to clothing, and used in export-oriented production, industry officials point out that the amount of raw leather brought into the economy can be increased through proper collection and preservation methods.

Musa Evin said in his statement: “Sacrificial hides generate an increase in sales of $700 to $800 million in the leather industry as raw leather. After processing in tanneries, they represent $800 million in sales in the form of shoes, bags, belts, leather and fur goods. They also create a separate value as gelatin.” he said.

Evin explained that sacrificial skins are raw materials for tanneries, leather, fur, clothing, saddlery and footwear industries: “Unfortunately, sacrificial skins cannot be fully incorporated into the economy. If some of them are collected or collected late, they do not have the desired quality because they are not cut by experts and are not well salted. This must be taken into account.” he warned.

Stating that sacrificial skins are very important for the fur industry in Türkiye, Evin said: “During Eid al-Adha, the inflow of imported leather to Türkiye decreases,” he said.

Stating that the skins of the sacrificial animals slaughtered in Istanbul are mostly processed in Tuzla and Çorlu, Evin said: “Raw skins do not reach the tanneries immediately after Eid al-Adha due to the collection and tendering processes. For this reason, the tanneries are working to increase their capacity after a few months.” he said.

Evin continued his speech as follows:

“It is very important to protect rawhides, especially in cold storage facilities during Eid al-Adha, which coincides with the summer period. Otherwise, rawhides deteriorate and become damaged. In addition, the full integration of rawhides into the economy will contribute greatly to Turkey's leather industry, with kilogram value in exports.”

Explaining that the leather industry in Türkiye is developing, Evin said: “The Turkish leather and fur industry is in a very good condition worldwide. We are one of the leading countries in the world of leather and fur industry, starting from the tanneries. The first thing that comes to the mind of a tourist who comes to Türkiye is to buy a leather and fur product.” he said.

Evin emphasized that the correct use of sacrificial skins is very important for a sustainable economy and concluded his words as follows:

“The leather and fur industry is an environmentally friendly industry. If we as a leather and fur industry do not use the skins of slaughtered animals, it will take hundreds of years for them to disappear into nature. It should not be forgotten that they are not only healthy, but also used for a very long time.”
