Huss reported on his account on the US social media platform X about the heat wave that hit the country.
Huss explained that there was a heat wave that caused the snow-covered surface of the largest glacier in the Alps to melt: “The Great Aletsch Glacier at Konkordiaplatz (the largest glacier in the Alps) turned from snow-covered ice to bare ice in just two weeks,” he said.
In an evaluation to public broadcaster SRF, Huss said: “According to our calculations and forecasts, this year's glacier retreat day will take place on June 29. This means that in the next few days the Swiss glaciers will probably lose all of the volume they have accumulated over the winter.” he said.
“We’re definitely going to lose a lot of ice this year.”
Huss pointed out that there is not enough snowfall in winter, explaining that this weakens the snow layer that protects the glaciers.
Huss emphasized that the summer heat came very early this year, saying:
“We had the first heat waves in May, with temperatures reaching 30 degrees in the lowlands. And now this heat wave. It is truly extraordinary in its intensity, but especially in its duration. The high temperatures we will almost certainly see in July and August will lead directly to long-term glacier loss. We will definitely lose a lot of ice this year.”
