“Do not intervene with water” warns of fires in electric cars

Varol, president of MMO Kayseri branch, said electric cars have advantages over fossil fuel vehicles.

Stating that the benefits of renewable energy electric vehicles are enhanced by their environmental friendliness, Varol explained that these vehicles have become more useful due to their maintenance costs.

Varol stated that scientific studies have been carried out on electric vehicles that, with these characteristics, become more economical than gasoline and diesel vehicles.

Varol argued that there are not many scientific and academic studies on the battery, saying:

“Electric vehicles have the ability to accelerate at high torque using electricity from the battery. Electric vehicles have many advantages, but one of their biggest disadvantages is battery fires. Microion batteries are used in electric vehicles. They are more useful and long-range batteries that can store more energy. In an accident, this gas is released and causes a fire.”

Varol recalled that in an accident involving an electric vehicle in Kayseri on March 14, the car burned and its driver died.

Warning to deactivate the central power supply during a fire

Varol pointed out that the fire could not be extinguished for a long time and lasted about an hour, saying:

“There is a lot of work in terms of electric vehicle development, but studies on battery extinguishing and battery fire prevention need to be carried out. Dry chemical foams and dry powders must be used to extinguish batteries. If you intervene with water As with a normal fire, you will accelerate the fire even more. Therefore, if possible, you must first deactivate the vehicle's central electrical system and then separate it from oxygen using dry chemical foam and dry powder. Water can then be used to cool the battery. If you first immediately intervene in the fire with water, the flame of this gas will make the fire even larger when it combines with water.”

Varol also added that batteries can cause problems when charging or without reason at 15 degrees below zero in winter and over 40 degrees in summer and that it is important to take the necessary precautions to avoid these situations.
