According to a scientific study, researchers have found a coating process whose light absorption capacity exceeds all previously developed coatings.
While the depth of black color in existing technologies is limited only by the light-absorbing power of carbon black-based pigments, the new method uses the technique of “structural absorption,” which captures light by changing the microscopic structure of the surface.
In this way, an average of 99.9 percent of the visible wavelengths of light hitting the surface are eliminated, resulting in perfect darkness.
The partnership of artificial intelligence and carbon
Chemist Zhiwei Liu explains that deep blacks are always the first choice for luxury car owners.
Liu explained that automotive companies have long been working on extreme black coating solutions suitable for mass production, explaining that the new formula they developed is based on carbon nanotubes.
This special composition absorbs light almost completely, giving the vehicle a strong visual impact and a deep feeling of luxury.
Mass production testing continues
This technology is reminiscent of a BMW model presented in 2019, which is the only example product to absorb 99 percent of the light.
The vehicle, which was designed specifically for trade fairs at the time, could no longer retain its color in the face of environmental influences and its pigment structure rapidly deteriorated.
The newly developed ultra-black coating is designed to meet current automotive standards.
However, before this technology can be widely used in passenger cars, durability and application tests must be carried out for some time.
