ABC News said, based on analysis of satellite images and confirmed videos, that Iran and Iran-backed groups had attacked the missile defense infrastructure that forms the basis of the early warning system of the United States and its allies.
The news said that available images show that at least 10 U.S. and allied radar sites have been hit by Tehran government unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and missiles since February 28, when tensions escalated in the region.
The news reports said satellite images reported damage to the radar systems, which rely on rare components and cost hundreds of millions of dollars, and that the exact extent of the damage could not be confirmed due to restrictions on access to data.
According to the news, it was confirmed that at least 25 points, including logistics structures, hangars and fuel storage areas, were hit on bases where US soldiers are stationed in the Middle East.
The news said Iran had attacked radar systems in at least five countries and noted that these included AN/TPY-2 radar components that support THAAD missile defense systems.
The news, which included expert opinions, said that while shutting down the radar systems would not completely eliminate the missile defense capability, it would “partially blind” the systems and therefore could weaken early warning and intervention capabilities.
The news also noted that radars are “costly, sensitive and vulnerable” systems and assessed that such targets are a priority for Iran.
US-Israeli attacks on Iran
Israel and the US launched a military attack on Iran on February 28, while negotiations between the governments of Tehran and Washington were still ongoing.
Iran responded with attacks on targets it identified in some countries in the region, particularly Qatar, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bahrain, where US bases are located, as well as Israel.
The American-Israeli attacks killed many high-ranking officials as well as Iranian leader Ali Khamenei.
According to Iranian officials, the death toll from the U.S.-Israeli strikes topped 1,348 and the number of injured topped 17,000.
