Artificial intelligence applications, the last fruit of the technological age, have now become a new part of our lives with their increasingly widespread network of uses. Applications that have become popular in recent years with “ChatGPT” and “Gemini” can, in addition to producing text, photos, audio and videos, also perform other tasks that first come to mind.
Designers who want to create advertising posters can, thanks to applications powered by artificial intelligence, prepare the desired visual products in a single click according to the commands they enter. An artist can produce the song he wants to prepare in a very short time; With the lawyer application powered by artificial intelligence, a case file can be solved instantly. Applications not limited to these areas are widely used in various sectors, particularly healthcare, education, finance, commerce, transportation, and logistics.
Voice assistants on smartphones, autonomous driving systems, smart roads and in-car applications, algorithms in online shopping sites as well as analyzes of images such as magnetic resonance (MR) or X-rays in the field of medical imaging are carried out with the support of artificial intelligence.
“There is now a structure that is moving toward the primary user.”
Talking about the future of artificial intelligence, Marmara University (MU) Faculty of Communication, Head of Visual Communication Design Department, Prof. Dr. Ali Murat Kırık said that the artificial intelligence system, which is a combination of machine learning, Deep Learning and language processing models are becoming increasingly widespread in Turkey and around the world.
Prof. explained that artificial intelligence has begun to develop into an extremely important point for Turkey. Kırık said: “We can say that it has started to expand into many business areas and fields. We see that artificial intelligence is being taken very seriously, especially in the media and education. “There is now a structure that is two-way towards the core user through applications and chatbots with artificial intelligence,” said.
Kırık pointed out that recently users have been able to access applications powered by artificial intelligence much more easily and mentioned that these applications have become the most important resource in the education sector.
Prof. DR. Kırık pointed out that the information obtained from these systems needs confirmation and comparison and that such information could lead to misleading users, explaining that students prepare their homework and theses using artificial intelligence applications can.
Emphasizing that adding the information obtained here to scientific sources without comparison and using it in studies without reference may cause serious problems, Kırık said: “Because there is no rule that artificial intelligence will always give the right answer. The most basic point we should not forget is that the existing parameters, data, “The inputs are added to the system and then the answers are presented based on the analysis of the questions asked. Here, presenting misleading information can lead to serious problems,” he said.
Is artificial intelligence causing unemployment and employment problems?
Prof. DR. Kırık stated that in a study conducted in England, a patient whom doctors could not diagnose was diagnosed using artificial intelligence, and in a study conducted in Russia, an artificial intelligence chat robot from that country passed the medical aptitude test with a score of 83 percent, therefore it has a positive effect in the medical world. He said there are different opinions about whether artificial intelligence will be useful or not.
Stating that artificial intelligence is also used in the media and entertainment industry, composing music and preparing scenarios through applications, Kırık continued:
“This situation can lead to unemployment and employment problems. Because we have to realize that it is possible for many people to do their jobs with just a single application of artificial intelligence. We are also seeing that copyright infringements are now being initiated.” The media. In particular, the world's largest broadcasting organizations, Artificial Intelligence They began to file serious copyright lawsuits against intelligence chatbots.
These items were detected because they were used without authorization. Subsequently, copyright lawsuits began to be filed against the relevant chat robots with artificial intelligence as the information and content available through the media was disseminated. This may cause us to face legal problems in the future. The European Union (EU) Parliament has stepped up its work in this area. He passed the law on artificial intelligence, which will come into force from 2025. “It is very likely that such laws will be passed in Turkey in the next few days.”
Prof. Ali Murat Kırık compared artificial intelligence to a baby and explained that it will grow and develop artificially in the coming years and will be able to carry all the characteristics of an adult human being.
Investments in artificial intelligence are increasing rapidly in Turkey
Pointing out that Turkey is not a backward country in terms of artificial intelligence, Kırık stated that investments in artificial intelligence have begun to increase both through state institutions and private sector initiatives and that the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK) is a leader in this regard.
Prof. DR. Kırık stated that the Council for Higher Education (YÖK) can take concrete steps in the future, opening new artificial intelligence programs, bachelor's and master's programs, integrating artificial intelligence into all educational programs, and including an appropriate education system.
Stating that artificial intelligence chatbot studies are in full swing in Turkey, Kırık said:
“We are witnessing the work of ASELSAN and HAVELSAN in this area. However, we can say that Baykar's development of a local and national chat robot in the private sector and the fact that he will spread it will be a serious advantage. The reason for this is as follows: the presence of local and national technologies that have the right can provide a serious advantage in accessing information. Because as you know, disinformation is one of the biggest problems of our time. Sometimes we see that such chat robots can be biased and give biased answers, and we also experience that they can hide information.
Just as we used to use search engines, today we will start using chatbots with artificial intelligence. While we at least have the opportunity to compare and contrast there, we will now start getting answers from there by simply asking the questions there. Therefore, it is very important that local and national chat robots and artificial intelligence applications are developed. “I think that the work that the Presidential Digital Transformation Office led by TÜBİTAK will do in this area and the artificial intelligence summits developed in the same way by the Presidential Directorate of Communications are very important in Turkey are.”
