The Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) has announced the labor input indices for the first quarter of the year.
Accordingly, the employment index in the entire industry, construction and trade-services sectors rose by 1.2 percent in the first quarter of the year compared to the same period last year. In subsectors, the index fell by 3.2 percent in the industrial sector, rose by 3.8 percent in the construction sector and by 3.1 percent in the trade and services sectors.
The employment index rose 0.2 percent quarterly. Looking at the sub-sectors, the index fell by 0.6 percent in the industrial sector and 0.3 percent in the construction sector, while it rose by 0.8 percent in the trade services sectors.
Decrease in the index of hours worked
The overall index of hours worked in the industry, construction and trade-services sectors fell by 1.7 percent in the first quarter of the year compared to the same period last year. When looking at the sub-sectors, the index fell by 5.1 percent in the industrial sector, by 4.8 percent in the construction sector and rose by 0.8 percent in the trade and services sectors.
On a quarterly basis, the overall index of hours worked in the industry, construction and trade-services sectors fell by 0.7 percent compared to the previous quarter. By subsector, the index fell 2 percent in the industrial sector and 4.8 percent in the construction sector, while rising 0.8 percent in the trade and services sectors.
The gross wage-salary index has increased
The gross wage-salary index rose by 37 percent in the January-March period compared to the same quarter last year. Looking at sub-sectors, the index recorded an increase of 34.7 percent in the industrial sector, 33.5 percent in the construction sector and 39 percent in the trade and services sectors.
The gross wage-salary index rose by 10.3 percent quarterly. In the sub-sector index, there was an increase of 11.1 percent in the industrial sector, 6.8 percent in the construction sector and 10.4 percent in the trade-services sectors.
Other indices
The labor cost index per hour in the entire industry, construction and trade-services sectors increased by 41.4 percent in the first quarter of the year compared to the same quarter of the previous year. The index in question rose by 12.5 percent quarterly.
The hourly wage index rose by 39.4 percent in the first quarter compared to the same quarter last year and by 11.1 percent compared to the previous quarter.
The labor cost index excluding hourly wages increased by 51.4 percent on an annual basis and by 19.5 percent on a quarterly basis.
