According to Oman's official news agency ONA, the transport and communications ministers of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries met for an extraordinary meeting and assessed efforts to strengthen regional logistics integration and improve rail connections between member countries.
The 19th Extraordinary Meeting of the GCC Ministerial Committee on Transport and Communications, attended by Oman, was held via video conference.
The meeting discussed the challenges and opportunities of the transport and logistics sector in the Gulf States, while projects to improve connectivity through the railway network between member countries were discussed.
The meeting assessed future action plans and steps to strengthen supply chains against possible risks that could negatively impact trade mobility.
In addition, the meeting emphasized the importance of developing new projects to ensure continuity in land, sea and air transport, continue the uninterrupted transport of goods and support critical sectors.
Disruptions in supply chains in the region following the Strait of Hormuz crisis prompted Gulf states to seek alternative transportation options that would reduce reliance on sea routes.
In this context, following the recent signing of two memorandums of understanding between Saudi Arabia and Turkey on cooperation in the field of transport, logistics and railway systems, work on the development of railway projects in the Gulf States is expected to be accelerated.
The GCC countries include Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman.
