The ferry MV Barima capsized during its journey from the capital Georgetown to the Port Kaituma region.
Juan Edghill, Guyana's Minister of Public Works, said in his post on his social media account that search and rescue operations were initiated for the ferry crew and 116 passengers after an emergency call was received around 11:00 p.m. local time.
Edghill stated that the ferry named MV Barima, built in 1939 with a crew of 17 people, had 250 life jackets, 2 rigid lifeboats and 6 inflatable lifeboats.
Guyana's Prime Minister Mark Phillips noted that 53 people have been rescued so far and efforts to rescue additional passengers continue.
