2.8 days before the catastrophe: Low Earth orbit is in danger of collapsing

The study, published by SciTechDaily, suggests that the “fault tolerance” in orbit is becoming dangerously narrow, especially with the increase in mega-satellite constellations.

CRASH Clock: Orbital catastrophe timer

Researchers at the Universities of British Columbia and Princeton have developed a metric called CRASH Time (Crash Occurrence and Significant Damage Time) to measure the speed of a catastrophe that would occur if objects in orbit lose their maneuverability.

According to satellite data for 2025, the time until a catastrophic collision occurs is calculated at 2.8 days if operators cannot send an evasive maneuver command.

In 2018, before mega satellite networks became widespread, this period was 164 days. This shows how quickly the risk in orbit is increasing.

Solar storms are a systemic threat

Even if solar storms don't directly tear satellites apart, they can trigger a major crisis by making them uncontrollable.

Storms heat and expand Earth's upper atmosphere, increasing drag for satellites. This makes orbital predictions by satellite operators impossible.

Especially huge networks like Starlink require constant intervention to stay in orbit:

Starlink satellites performed 144,404 evasive maneuvers between late 2024 and mid-2025.

This means that a maneuver is carried out every 1.8 minutes across the entire network.

Kessler syndrome and beyond

The scenario in which collisions turn the orbit into a pile of rubble through a chain reaction, known in science as “Kessler syndrome,” is widely described as a process that will take years.

However, this new study points to a much more immediate danger that can begin within days in the event of loss of control.

Today, “dangerous close encounters” occur every 36 seconds at a distance of 1 kilometer in low Earth orbit.

If a severe solar storm of the magnitude of a “Carrington event” were to occur today; It emphasizes that the risk of collision between satellite networks critical to communications, navigation (GPS), financial systems and military operations is inevitable.
