WFP: 318 million people will be affected by famine or worse by 2026

Bauer participated online in the weekly press conference of the UN office in Geneva and made assessments.

Bauer explained that the world is facing a global hunger crisis and there are not enough resources for intervention:

“According to the WFP Global Outlook Report 2026, 318 million people will be affected by crisis-level famine or worse next year.

Bauer emphasized that WFP aims to reach 110 million of the most vulnerable people in 2026 with an estimated budget of $13 billion, but current funding estimates show WFP will only be able to reach just under half of its goal this year.

“An estimated 14 million people are expected to move from Level 3, meaning “crisis,” to Level 4, known as “emergency,” in the United Nations Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) in 2026 due to funding cuts.” In his statements, Bauer pointed out that around 40 million people are currently on the 4th level of the IPC.

“WFP will need $13 billion in 2026 to help around 110 million people worldwide. WFP expects to be able to support around one in three people who need food assistance in 2026,” said Bauer. gave his assessment.
