TÜRKSAT 5A, which occupies an important place in Turkey's satellite fleet, celebrates its 4th anniversary.
TÜRKSAT 5A, manufactured under an agreement with Airbus in November 2017, was launched on January 8, 2021 from Cape Canaveral Base in Florida, USA.
The TÜRKSAT 5A, which weighs around 3.5 kilograms, has been used for television broadcasts and communication purposes since the first day of its commissioning and is still in use.
The satellite, which has completed 1,461 orbits around the Earth, has a lifespan of 31 years. TÜRKSAT 5A, which will remain in operation until the 2050s, allows Türkiye to use some television frequencies. In addition, it allows publications to reach the north, west and south of Africa, the Middle East, the Caucasus and all of Europe.
The messenger of TÜRKSAT 6A
TÜRKSAT 5A and TÜRKSAT 5B, launched 11 months later, were the last communications satellites not produced by Turkey. Based on the experience gained and investments made, the first domestic and national satellite TÜRKSAT 6A arrived and was launched into space on July 8, 2024. Thus, the number of Turkey's active communications satellites increased to 7 in the journey that began with the launch of TÜRKSAT 1B in 1994.
In addition, although Türkiye was among the eleven countries that built its own satellite, two-thirds of the world was included in the coverage area.
3 of them have completed their lives
After TÜRKSAT 1B, which was in service between 1994 and 2006, TÜRKSAT 1C entered service in 1996 and remained in service until 2008. TÜRKSAT 2A served as a communications satellite between 2001 and 2016. These 3 satellites have now ended their lives.
6 Continue service
There are six other active satellites of Türkiye providing communication services in space.
TÜRKSAT 3A was launched in 2008 and will remain in service until 2028. TÜRKSAT 4A was launched in 2014 and will be in service until 2044. While TÜRKSAT 4B, which was launched a year later, will remain in operation until 2045, TÜRKSAT 5B, which was launched after 5A in late 2021, will continue to deliver broadcasts until 2058.
The local and national satellite TÜRKSAT 6A was launched last year and will remain active until 2040.
