Trump to demonstrators in Iran: protests continue

US President Trump commented on the protests in Iran in part of his economic speech in Detroit.

In a portion of his speech that lasted more than an hour, Trump reiterated the statement he made on his social media account today.

Trump said many people had lost their lives in the demonstrations in Iran and said: “I call on all Iranian patriots: continue the protests, take over your institutions if possible and write down the names of the murderers and perpetrators who have abused you.” he said.

Trump urged protesters to “record the names of the people who have mistreated them,” arguing that those people would “pay a heavy price.”

Trump said: “I have canceled all meetings with Iranian officials until the senseless killing of protesters stops. I'm just telling protesters that help is on the way.” he said.

Trump recalled that they also imposed tariffs on countries trading with Iran, noting that this practice came into effect today.

Trump also took aim at the Iranian government, arguing that Iran was a great country until the current administration took office but then deteriorated, saying, “Now everything is very fragile.” he said.

Demonstrations in Iran

The protests started on December 28, 2025 by shopkeepers at the Grand Bazaar of Tehran, Iran, due to the sharp devaluation of the local currency due to foreign currency and economic problems, spread to many cities in the country.

While no official statement was made on those killed or injured in the demonstrations, Iran's Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) stated in its report published on the 16th day of demonstrations on January 13 that a total of 664 people, including 133 police officers, a prosecutor and 9 under the age of 18, lost their lives and 10,721 people were arrested.

On January 9, the internet was shut down across the country as violence and police operations increased during the protests.
