This FIELD only exists in 5 countries, one of which is in Turkey.

Türkiye has taken important steps in electron acceleration technology in recent years.

In Turkey, which has partnerships with institutions such as the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) and Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Applications in The Middle East (SESAME), one of the most important steps in superconductor technology was taken with TARLA.

TARLA, which was realized within Ankara University and later became a state research laboratory by law, ranked Turkey among the top five countries in the world with superconducting electron accelerator technology with its Phase 1 20 meV beamline (em-ivi). Household appliances and competencies.

11 projects are being carried out

Prof. DR. So far, 35 million Euros have been allocated for TARLA under the leadership of Hasan Serdar Öztürk. Thanks to its ability to accelerate electrons using superconductor technology, TARLA will bring significant advances in the field of science and technology. Educational and research studies in many fields such as radio and hadron therapy in cancer patients, particle physics, nuclear physics, biotechnology, nanotechnology, genetics, materials, industry, metrology, chemistry, energy, defense, space, communications and lasers are carried out outside at TARLA.

Prof. Öztürk said: “With TARLA, Turkey has crossed an important threshold in scientific studies based on accelerator technologies.” Currently, 11 projects are being carried out in TARLA, 2 of which are supported by the EU and 9 by TÜBİTAK. “Since the installation of TARLA was also carried out by the Turkish team, important experience was gained,” he says.

TARLA lead researcher Dr. Veli Yıldız is a name that has done important work in the field of accelerators abroad. Yıldız told TARLA and the work done for TRT Haber:

“TARLA is a center that offers the possibility of conducting research with particles. That is why it is of great importance. There are many particle accelerators in the world, but TARLA is a superconducting accelerator and its task is to emit a beam to conduct experiments. There are not many centers based on superconducting technology in the world. It exists in five countries. “TARLA will be one of them.”

“After the first acceleration they hung up the Turkish flag”

“TARLA has been established for a long time, but for an accelerator to work, many supporting systems are required. The facilities were completed at the end of 2023 and we are currently intensively installing and testing the beam and accelerator line. In April, we took a big step. We accelerated superconducting particles. “After the first acceleration, the colleagues here in the control room hung the Turkish flag.”

“It will greatly improve science”

“This is the first acceleration in Turkey. TARLA will significantly improve accelerator technology and accelerator science in Turkey. Materials research can be carried out in the fields of physics, chemistry and biology using the particles coming out of the accelerator, the emitted beams or the laser. “For example, if we irradiate a soil sample and place detectors around it, we can see what materials are in it.”

“It is used in radiotherapy and hadron therapy”

“Accelerators have many uses in medicine. It is used in the sterilization of medical devices as well as in cancer treatment. It is used in radiotherapy and hadron therapy. “In addition, if we want to see whether there are harmful or harmful substances in the materials imported from abroad, we can see them here using the irradiation method.”

“Science, not fiction”

“Let's stop calling the studies 'science fiction'. Science… It used to be science fiction, but let's say it's a technology that is being used in many places and may even be delayed in Turkey. TARLA will fill that gap in Turkey. “I think that such a plant with its developed technology and byproducts will be of great benefit to Turkey in the future.”

“It is unique in Turkey with its superconducting accelerator”

“TARLA was previously affiliated with Ankara University, but it became a national center in 2020. Currently, we are a national research center independent of the university, even though we are located on its campus. What makes this place unique in Turkey is its size, the size of the accelerator, its facilities, the fact that it is a national center and the type of accelerator, that is, it is superconducting.

TARLA will definitely move Turkey forward. With the research being done here, both the development of the technology and the opportunities it will provide to scientists, technology will definitely come back in some way and both technology and science will progress in Turkey. Accelerator technology is really important worldwide. “Applicant technology touches many places and I am happy that there is such a facility in Turkey.”
