The key to competition in artificial intelligence: data power

The data power of technology companies directly impacts their success in artificial intelligence. Data diversity enables artificial intelligence models to deliver better results in complex operations.

Although OpenAI's ChatGPT model has the most users, US technology giant Google also stands out in this area with its artificial intelligence model Gemini.

According to a study by US-based digital market research firm Sensor Tower, in recent months Google Gemini has started to surpass ChatGPT in terms of increase in downloads, monthly growth of active users and time spent in the application.

Google, which holds an important place in the history of the Internet with its search engine, has diversified its services over the years by investing in various technologies. The company, which owns many platforms from YouTube to the Android operating system, also maintains important data by listing websites around the world using search engine bots.

Although its data superiority gives Google a significant advantage in developing artificial intelligence technologies, it also brings with it discussions of monopolization in the technology.

“They have incredibly privileged access.”

Matthew Prince, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Cloudflare, one of the leading technology companies in the US, said in the publication of the US technology and culture magazine Wired that Google is the largest player in the history of the Internet, especially in the last 27 years.

Prince explained that it is in Google's interest to have more websites and that this makes search more valuable: “That's why Google has developed all the necessary tools to convert traffic to its website into money. They have financed the creation of the Internet for the last 27 years.”

Prince explained that Google stands out today for its work in artificial intelligence and continued his words as follows:

“Google has combined the search robot with the AI robot and created the biggest challenge. You can't choose to leave one, leaving one means leaving both, which is a real challenge. One thing that surprises me is that Google today sees 3.2 times more pages on the Internet than OpenAI, 4.6 times more than Microsoft and 4.8 times more than Anthropic and Meta. They have an incredibly privileged reach.”

“Google is the company that is hindering progress on the Internet”

On Google's access to more data compared to other platforms, Prince said: “When we ask why Gemini has become so much better than OpenAI recently, I think the answer is that they have more data. It's not about chips, research or technology.”

Explaining that Google is the company that is hindering progress on the Internet, Prince said: “Unless we force or convince Google that they should follow the same rules as everyone else and split their browser between search and artificial intelligence, I think it will be difficult to fully protect all content.”

Prince explained that they declared Content Independence Day on July 1st:

“In this context, we offered free tools to users who did not want artificial intelligence to obtain their data. After these tools were put into operation, an incredible result appeared: more than 400 billion artificial intelligence requests were blocked from obtaining content data.”
