Teachers and students at Hacı Ali-Meryem Birdane Secondary School in Bolvadin District conducted a project on technologies that prevent traffic accidents caused by drivers falling asleep at the wheel.
Using a camera that tracks the driver's eye movements, a bracelet that measures heart rate, and software powered by artificial intelligence, the students developed a system that emits vibrations and an audible warning through the vehicle's speakers when drowsiness is detected.
The aim is to prevent accidents that can occur as a result of sleeping.
Teachers and students who applied for the Smart Transportation Competition at TEKNOFEST, which was held at Adana Airport under the main leadership of the Turkish Technology Team Foundation and the Ministry of Industry and Technology, and where TRT was a communication partner, were found worthy of first place Price.
Information technology teacher Fahri Altay said that with the projects they prepared with their students Akif Recep Pehlivan and Gazi Eren Yıldız, they aim to reduce accidents caused by sleeping.
Stating that bus accidents caused by the driver's sleep contributed to the launch of the project, Altay said:
“Our system gives a tactile warning via vibration, both through the system and on the wristband, when the driver closes his eyes for two seconds, i.e. sleeps. We received our award from our president. Our next goal is to move our students further in the field of artificial intelligence.”

Explaining that the project aims to prevent accidents, 13-year-old Akif Recep Pehlivan, one of the students, said: “We developed such a project by using machine learning in our research. It's a great feeling to be at TEKNOFEST.” “This place is really crowded. Those who come show great interest in our project.” “I bought it, so I'm very happy,” he said.
